Poll to find first national bird for Britain
Votes can now be cast in an online poll to choose what could become Britain's first national bird.
Currently Britain does not have a national bird, but ornithologist David Lindo believes that should change.
A shortlist of 10 birds has been chosen by online voters on his campaign's website (http://www.votenationalbird.com/) from an original list of 60.
Mr Lindo will close the vote on the day of the general election, 7 May, and ask the new government to officially appoint the winner as national bird.

Greece.sucks
At one time websites had a simple suffix such as .com or .co.uk or .gr, etc. Then, it seems, the world ran short of web addresses so others, such as .info and .org, became available. And so it goes on... and on, and on... including .mom, .gay, .bible, .xxx and .porn
Around now you can set up a website ending in .sucks (http://www.businessinsider.com/dot-sucks-domain-names-going-on-sale-2015-3)
Not too hard to see that ryanair.sucks or ukip.sucks might be quite in demand (I'll leave other possibilities to your imagination).
It'll cost quite a few bob. For one thing, Ryanair probably aren't going to want anyone setting up ryanair.sucks and, the reckoning is, many companies will buy the .sucks variation just to stop anyone else buying it.
Or they'll go legal, as in the case of walmart.horse (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/03/why-the-long-face-retailer-says-walmart-horse-domain-infringes-its-ip/)
I'll let you know if I happen to herr of anyone wanting to buy greece.sucks...

Police in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, were questioning students and teachers at the local Dairy School on Monday after a coroner deemed that Vangelis Giakoumakis, a student at the school who was found dead after 38 days missing, took his own life.
A police investigation into the disappearance of Giakoumakis had indicated that the 20-year-old had suffered serious bullying at the school.
Meanwhile members of the force’s cyber crimes unit are said to have traced the suspected operators of a blog which had featured offensive and derogatory postings about the student.

Spooks tell business: Consider stripping staff of smart phones to avoid cyber attacks
Advice issued by GCHQ and seen by The Telegraph warns firms that staff are the 'weakest link in the security chain' and could be blackmailed by enemy spies
Britain’s spies have told businesses to consider stripping employees of company smart phones and memory sticks to protect themselves from cyber-attacks, The Telegraph can disclose.
Advice issued by GCHQ, the government’s listening post, and other departments warns firms that staff are the “weakest link in the security chain” and protective action must be taken.
Companies have been told staff should only use trusted Wi-Fi networks – effectively ruling out using laptops in coffee shops like Starbucks without special protections – and constantly update internet browsers.

West Midlands police to reduce number of officers on the beat
Britain’s second-biggest force to undergo radical changes such as move to ‘digital policing’, owing to budget cuts and rise in domestic and online crime
The move could prove politically sensitive but West Midlands chief constable Chris Sims says it is justified because a proportion of crime has moved off the streets and into the home and online.
The force is increasingly focused on a range of domestic crimes, such as the abuse of vulnerable people, internet fraud, domestic abuse, forced marriage and female genital mutilation as well as increasing its level of child protection.
“Now, threats and harms are not based on street-based issues. 50% of cases in Birmingham magistrates’ court are domestic abuse,” Sims said.

Router company D-Link has patched two separate vulnerabilities in its firmware that could be exploited remotely and lead to takeover and arbitrary code execution.
Routers under the DCS-93xl umbrella, including the DCS-930L, DCS-931L, DCS-932L, and DCS-933L models, contain a hole that enabled remote authenticated attackers to upload their own files – in the location of their choosing – to the device. This could allow an attacker to create, modify or delete information.
The router company recently fixed three critical security vulnerabilities in a multitude of its home routers... Model numbers DIR-626L, 808L, 820L, 826L, 830L, and 836L were all updated to reflect the fixes over the past two weeks or so.

For some reason I always thought the national bird was the wren. Maybe because it appeared on the old farthings.

Gosh, yes, I'd forgotten about farthings (bit before my time ;) )
For the benefit of younger readers: The story of the farthing (http://24carat.co.uk/farthingstoryframe.html)
Never knew there were half, third and quarter farthings! (...albeit in the colonies).

A senior Bank of England official has said that Greece will never be able to get rid of its enormous debt mountain, since the "political pain" that its leaders would suffer would make it impossible.

Dunno why nobody has mentioned it - obviously the British bird is the Norwegian Blue (parrot). Sums Britain up - hilarious but useless!

Then there is the Pigeon?.....They were used to great effect through ought both WW1 & WW2 to carry messages. Indeed some birds even received medals of commendation!

Good point! Not the most attractive of birds but perhaps the most deserving.

Interesting article in the Telegraph by BoZo, oops, sorry, BoJo re the demolition of ancient religious sites by Isis, finishes thus:
...if someone told me that they were forming an Antiquities Protection Force – a special brigade of pipe-puffing leather-elbowed history buffs and ancient monument fetishists, dedicated to repelling the attacks of the barbarians – I think I would be very tempted to sign up.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/islamic-state/11473832/Sign-me-up-to-fight-Islamic-States-demolition-of-the-past.html
Even if he gave in to his temptation I don't think he'd do more for Britain than the pigeons did. Don't reckon he's got much chance of getting off with Amal Alamuddin, either.

The police in the fair city of Birmingham are ignoring any "threat or harm" that doesn't have headline appeal. So, if you are a person who is mugged in the city centre your case will be given scant attention. Likewise, if your house is burgled or your car is stolen. In the latter instances the most you can hope for is a crime number to facilitate your insurance claim. Chief Constables are only interested in crimes that gives the government good press. The reason that 50% of cases in Birmingham magistrates courts relate to domestic violence is because these cases are now prosecuted whereas they used to swept under the carpet because the abused often used to withdraw the complaint. They still do but the police will prosecute. Note that the the number of successful prosecutions isn't mentioned: this hasn't increased significantly in real terms.

Thanks, Ari, I wondered about that. Looks like the police have finally twigged that knowing the name and address of the (alleged) perpetrator saves them a lot of time and money.

I was interviewed for the national Crime Survey a couple of days ago. Said I hadn't committed any.
It was very interesting. They asked about my experience of every possible type of crime in the past year, including internet fraud and having my mobile nicked. Noe of which had happened to me. If I had the follow up questions would have been had I reported it to the cops and if not why not and was I happy with the outcome. Also what did I think about the effectiveness of the cops and the criminal justice system etc. etc. Did I think crime was going up or down etc. Very thorough - lasted about 50 minutes.
I tend to share the cynicism about the cops only prosecuting the dead certs. But If I remember right burglary and car crime are down, fraud and violence up. The crime survey should show the discrepancies and how peeps feel about it.
