About one third of gas stations in Greece have tampered with their fuel pumps in order to cheat their customers out of 5% to 11% of the fuel they pay for, announced the Ministry of Finance following its preliminary inspections.

For the past month the General Secretariat of Industry’s Directorate of Metrology has carried out secret inspections with a specially-converted vehicle, which accurately measures the true quantity of gas being sold to customers.

With unleaded gas being sold for about 1.43 euros, this means that for every 50 euros of fuel purchased, customers were being cheated out of 3.5 to 8 euros. The first series of inspections were carried out in Korydallos, Tavros, Keratsini and Nikea.
