Hot air mass to push temperatures up again

A mass of hot air sweeping into Italy and the Balkans from the south is expected to push temperatures back up to unseasonably high levels this week, the National Observatory of Athens’ Meteo weather service said on Monday.

Daytime highs are forecast to reach 35-38 degrees Celsius in parts of the country through Thursday.

Highs on most of the islands – with the exception of those in the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese – and southern parts of the country will remain at more moderate levels in the high 20s and low 30s.

Temperatures to creep up to 39C this week

Greece’s national weather service, EMY, said that a blustery weekend which brought strong winds, showers and hail to many parts of the mainland – especially in the north and west – will give way to a heatwave this week. Temperatures are expected to start rising on Monday, to reach as high as 39 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday.

The hot weather also raises the risk of wildfires.

More hot days lie ahead

The meteorological service at the National Observatory of Athens, Meteo.gr, expects temperatures to rise above usual levels for a sustained period of time.

In a bulletin on Thursday, Meteo said that the relatively cool air masses which had prevailed over eastern Europe and spared it the heatwaves of western parts are gradually giving way to warmer ones. Their temperature will be up to around 10 degrees Celsius above the norm for the season.

The new wave of heat began on Thursday and although such forecasts can vary, the above-average temperatures are expected to persist at least until the end of the month.

High summer back for the weekend

It’s a great time for hitting the beach again as meteorologists forecast temperatures rising into the high 30s across Greece over the next four days.

The National Observatory’s Meteo weather service on Thursday reported that daytime highs on Friday and Saturday will reach and perhaps even
exceed 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of the county as hot air masses sweep in from the central and eastern Mediterranean.

Kef so far looks to be fairly cool in comparison, maybe 30C Friday and Saturday then mid-twenties.
