New York state to dim lights to save migrating birds

The state of New York is to turn off non-essential lights in state-run buildings to help birds navigate their migratory routes in spring and autumn.

Migrating birds are believed to use stars to navigate but they can be disorientated by electric lights, causing them to crash into buildings.

The phenomenon, known as "fatal light attraction", is estimated to kill up to one billion birds a year in the US.

Millions of birds migrate through New York along the Atlantic Flyway route.

Now those passing over the city by night will stand a better chance of making it further north.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that bright outdoor lights will be turned off between 23:00 and dawn during peak migration seasons in spring and autumn.

The state will join several well-known New York landmarks that have already signed up to the National Audubon Society's Lights Out programme, including the Rockefeller Centre, Chrysler Building and Time Warner Centre.

Dog poo to be DNA tested in council plan to track down lazy owners
Barking and Dagenham say they will be the first in the UK to use forensic testing to catch owners who fail to clear up after their dogs

Barking and Dagenham will unveil the extraordinary new measure at a dog fouling summit on Tuesday called “Leading a New Way”.

Similar systems already operating in the States have reduced dog fouling by up tp 90 per cent, according to Gary Downie, managing director of Streetkleen, the firm behind PooPrints DNA testing.

Brunete, a town 20 miles west of Madrid, launched a campaign whereby they sent the offending deposits back to the owners in an official box marked 'Lost Property' .

£827,000: What Ukip's housing spokesman was paid in housing benefit as a private landlord

Some of Britain’s wealthiest private landlords are being paid millions of pounds each from the taxpayer in housing benefit, at a time when social housing is being cut, new figures show.

Councils across Britain have disclosed the landlords who receive the largest sums in housing benefit, following Freedom of Information requests from the GMB union.

The figures show that Ukip’s housing spokesman Andrew Charalambous is among the biggest landlord recipients of housing benefit, having received £826,395 in the last tax year, putting him 10th on the housing benefit rich list.

Mohammed Tanveer Taj in Watford came out as the landlord making the most from housing benefit, with an income of more than £3.2m.

Mr Charalambous, who has said migrants are a “massive factor in the overcrowding of social housing”, has previously acknowledged that many of his tenants are migrants.

China overtakes France to become world's second biggest wine-growing area

France still remains the biggest producer of wine, with 46.7 million hectolitres (mhl) made each year.

The United States is the biggest consumer of wine, followed by France and Italy.

The biggest wine importers were Germany, the UK and the US, the IOVW added. Total global trade was valued at €26 billion.

Earlier in April this year it was reported that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had fallen victim to Chinese counterfeiters, who were creating fake bottles of the couple’s Miraval Rosé.

While out cycling today, there was a road closure at the junction near the British cemetary. I was unable to take the Fiscardo road and was directed towards Dilinata and the new road over the mountains. No idea how long it is likely to be closed, but could cause a major problem for the Bike Challenge on 2nd May.

I don't know if this answers your concern but Maik reported this on 19.04.15...

From tomorrow, 20/04/15,  - 28/04/15 the Argostoli-Fiskardo road will be blocked from the junction to Falari at Drapano to the Lixouri junction at Hani Lambrinou between the hours 08:00-20:00

Ah yes, thanks BeeTee, I vaguely remember reading it now! So should be open for the 2nd May, but who knows what other roads will be closed?    :dunno:

Heard there's been another (official) announcement re these roadworks but haven't got any details yet. Sounded as though the bike race would be OK, though  :dunno:

Plan on the cards for flat VAT rate of 18 pct

The government in Athens is planning to implement a single value-added tax rate abolishing all existing exemptions, according to Brussels officials.

Athens categorically refutes such a scenario, noting that negotiations are still ongoing.

Meanwhile, German newspaper Bild referred to a detailed plan of reforms that Athens is promoting, citing Greek government sources. The plan, which provides for... a luxury tax “on island holidays”...
