Historic Thomson travel brand to be phased out as owner TUI loses the name made famous by package holidays

The historic Thomson brand will be phased out over the next few years as owner TUI Group ditches the name made famous by Britain's love of package holidays.

TUI Group, the world’s biggest travel firm behind Thomson and First Choice, said today it also plans to sell its LateRooms website by the end of the year and has confirmed it will migrate to one single brand.

The rebranding, which will also mean the disappearance of First Choice, will happen gradually over several years, with the UK being the last country to migrate. From that point it will be known as TUI across all markets.

The Thomson brand was established in 1965 by Canadian media baron Roy Thomson and has been synonymous with package holidays for a half a century.

Thomson made its fortune on Britons emerging from years of post-war austerity who had enough money and confidence to switch holiday habits from Blackpool and Bognor to Benidorm and Barcelona.

Thomson’s initially focussed on the emerging, and cheap, resorts in the Mediterranean and particularly Spain. The company's first tour was a 13-day trip from Manchester to Palma in Majorca costing 41 guineas.

Prices soon plunged and using its charter airline Britannia Thomson soon established itself as a leading light in the package holiday market.

By the 1980s Thomson had become a leader in the market, selling more than three million package holidays a year and offering a whole range of tours.

Thomson Travel Group was floated on the Stock Exchange in May 1998 and in 2000 it was was acquired by German conglomerate Preussag which was renamed Tui in July 2002.
