Title: Items to be carried in your car
Post by: HiFi on Friday, 09 March, 2018 @ 14:28:10
Sifitas have just taken delivery of car first aid kits, warning triangles and fluorescent sleeveless tops after the police have been fining motorists in recent days for non possession.

It will be interesting to note if all the hire cars are so equipped.

What exactly do we legally need to carry in the vehicle?

Based on police tickets here recently - definitely a first aid kit (date stamped and in date) and a fluorescent jacket (sleeveless is fine). Have just asked someone who definitely knows if it is one jacket or two, plus about red warning triangle and small fire extinguisher...watch this space......

I'm told all of these things (one jacket, not two) plus a spare tyre (some cars come without nowadays?) and a torch? Please form a double queue to sue me.......

How much is the fine?

I think it is 50E per item - half price if paid in 10 days. Very difficult to get the same answer from two different police officers or two different google searches! A first aid kit, one jacket and a triangle costs a total of around 15E.

Am reliably informed it's 80E per item, not 50. Service stations seem to be socking up again on all items. E.g. Shell opposite the bridge in Argostoli has a set of triangle, jacket, first aid kit & extinguisher for @ 30E......

As a short gap measure, might a crisp €50 wrapped around my licence suffice, do you think?

Sifitas have just taken delivery of car first aid kits, warning triangles and fluorescent sleeveless tops after the police have been fining motorists in recent days for non possession.

Also a fire extinguisher should be included, probably dated within 5 years. There is no explanation of what is required in the first aid kit, but should be common sense. Having a torch is a new one I hadn't heard of, suggested by HiFi, but would be sensible I suppose.
Another report suggested that tyre pressures are being checked!
Carrying these items has been law for some years now and we have always carried them. When I took the car for a test in January, I could see the examiner struggling to open the car boot, which had a faulty lock. He didn't manage to get in, but I can only imagine he wanted to check if these items were carried.

I think historically the KTEO checked for these items and the island's hi vis jacket and first aid kit would be passed from car to car.
To my knowledge these items haven't been KTEO checked for many years now....
Or is that about to change?

According to the European Commission, AA and RAC:

Quote
Safety equipment for cars
Warning triangle
First-aid kit
Fire extinguisher

While driving in Greece you are required by law to carry the following items. Hefty on-the-spot fines can be issued for failing to carry specific items:

Vehicles registered in Greece or abroad must carry a warning triangle
Fire extinguisher/first aid kit are compulsory on board private vehicle

You must carry the following in Greece

Fire extinguisher
First-aid kit
Warning triangle (not required for motorcycles or mopeds)

But things could have changed (without much notice).

Nothing about it mentioned in the New rules for traffic violators (http://www.ekathimerini.com/226846/article/ekathimerini/news/new-rules-for-traffic-violators) (ekathimerini)

The last time we drove we had to have fire extinguisher, florescent jackets, first aid kid, warning triangle and spare bulb kit. The bulbs weren't for our car but we had to carry them, think it was only for France though!
