Title: The lost & abandoned animals of Lixouri
Post by: jeanskala on Saturday, 08 February, 2014 @ 15:51:52
As most of you know, the island has a hard time of it lately, Lixouri has been so badly hit with many homeless fleeing the island where they could. There are a lot of domestic animals left behind and although food and supplies are coming in for humans, the animals also need food. We are appealing for any donation you can spare to help us to buy as much food as possible as this is not going to be back to any sort of normal life for a long time.  I'm going to Lixouri with Peter Lee and Martin Greene today with a delivery of animal food.  The university has already asked for this help, plus one dog needing vet treatment, not sure what yet but should know after today.  A lot of donations have already come in to help cover the costs of this but we'll have a better idea of what is needed after today's vist.

I have also approached a couple of UK charities requesting help to pay for some food, this will not be a one off it will be needed for some time to come.  However, a company has heard of the plight of the abandoned and lost animals of Lixouri and has offered the Kefalonia Animal Trust charity 10 free sacks of biscuits if 45 sacks of dog and 45 sacks of cat biscuits are purchased at the discounrted price of 1,440 euros, a saving of 4 euros for each sack of dog biscuits and nearly 10 euros for eah sack of cat biscuits - 90 sacks may seem a lot but this is going to be a long term problem.

Obviusly KATs doesn't want to turn down this generous offer, so they are asking if people would sponsor a sack of animal biscuits by donating 14 euros. Donations can either be made via KATs PayPal account (details on the KATs website) or at the charity shops in Skala (Tuesday & Friday mornings) or Svoronata (Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings). Alternately, you could always take a bag of cat and or dog biscuits (no tinned food please) to the Hollis event at Andromeda, Lourdas, tonight.

There must be a lot of abandoned animals over there and they must be very afraid as well as hungry, with your help we will do our best to help them.

Thank you
Pat Dolman

Just to keep you upto date regarding the appeal for the Lixouri animals...

Thanks to Patrick, Jane, Graham and Pauline, the vans were loaded and now the sacks of biscuits for the Lixouri animals are now packed into a horse box. It was hard work, not helped by thunderstorm and heavy rain.

We and the animals are so lucky to have such generous supporters and willing helpers, thank you all. Through your generous donations we have covered the cost of animal biscuits, plus the 10 free sacks donated by the company. However, we still need those donations to continue, to enable KATs to treat the animals with flea/tick spot-ons and wormers and also to help towards the neutering/welfare costs. Some Lixouri owners have already asked for their animals to be neutered which KATs helped fund, therefore we are hopeful they will suggest to their friends and neighbours they do the same.   :btu:

The team are out in Lixouri today with food handouts for the animals in the square, while others check the villages out in order to formulate the best plan of action. Following a mag 4.8 earthquake earlier this morning, the team are requesting that mother nature keeps any further earthquakes to herself now as everyone has all had more than enough!

If you haven't already donated, it's simply done either through the two charity shops in Svoronata and Skala, or via PayPal - details can be found on www.kefaloniaanimaltrust.org, and click on 'Make a donation'. Donations can be made in pounds or euros - click on the appropriate button, if you don't have a PayPal account, you can donate as a guest.

Again, many thanks from us and the animals of Lixouri.  :luv:  :cat: (sorry no doggie emoticons!)

Around 2,000 euros has been thus far donated to feed the animals of Lixouri. KATs volunteers travel over to Lixouri by ferry (who make no charge for the return trip) twice a week and head initially for the main square, where the locals and dogs are waiting for them. Over 200 kg of cat and dog biscuits are distributed here and later, where the roads allow, they also travel to some of the villages to distribute biscuits.

The local people seem extremely grateful for the help and there have been numerous enquires about neutering - several have already been done by the charity and a couple of dogs have been treated for wounds/infections. It is hoped that there will be enough money donated to get the region's dogs treated for worms, fleas and ticks,as well as offering help towards neutering.

KATs wish to thank everyone who has already donated money for the Lixouri appeal but please continue to mention the appeal to all your family and animal-loving friends, so we can afford to neuter more of the abandoned/lost dogs.

Thank you
