Rent cut is granted to most

The range of coverage of the 40 percent discount on rent payments for the month of April for enterprises and workers has been expanded according to an amendment the government has tabled in Parliament. The decision has drawn a strong reaction from property owners, for whom the government has provided no breaks, and who sarcastically note that “property owners may live in another world that does not suffer any consequences from the coronavirus.”

Coronavirus: 'Keep cats indoors', vets recommend

Veterinary scientists have recommended cat owners keep their pets indoors to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

But the British Veterinary Association said "owners should not worry" about any risk of infection from their pets.

"There isn't a single case of a pet dog or cat infecting a human with Covid-19," Dr Angel Almendros, from City University in Hong Kong, told BBC News.

Research has shown cats may be able to catch the virus from other cats.

Some hotels eye June reopening

Some hotels could gradually start opening in June, though with health protocols that remain to be determined, the head of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) estimated on Tuesday.

Yiannis Retsos stressed that this was his personal view, before adding that the markets from which most foreign holidaymakers are expected to travel to Greece are countries that have performed rather well in tackling the Covid-19 epidemic, such as Israel, Cyprus, the Balkan states, Lebanon and some other Arabic states.

He also argued that the effort to restart Greek tourism will begin halfway through the third quarter of the year – i.e. in August – and will not be back up and running normally before September. As a result, a number of seasonal hotels are not expected to open at all this year.

As for safeguarding the health of visitors, the SETE chief said discussions have advanced on the possibility of mass tests for visitors, possibly at their departure airports.

Cat lovers crash national vets' website after coronavirus fears

Confusion about whether millions of cats should be placed on lockdown has created alarm among pet owners and raised the prospect of Larry the Downing Street cat having to go into isolation.

Cat owners crashed the website of the British Veterinary Association on Wednesday after it appeared to suggest the UK’s estimated 10.9 million cats should be on curfew during the coronavirus outbreak.

The association was forced to clarify that only cat owners who are self-isolating with symptoms of coronavirus should keep their pets indoors, after a study found cats can spread the virus.

Trump order encourages US to mine the moon

The world may be racked by the coronavirus, but Donald Trump has less earthly concerns on his mind, too, after signing an executive order encouraging the US to mine the moon for minerals.

The executive order makes clear that the US doesn’t view space as a “global commons”, opening the way for the mining of the moon without any sort of international treaty.

Could coronavirus be the beginning of the end for the oil industry?

As thousands of aircraft were grounded and billions of citizens ordered to stay home, global demand for oil, the key lubricant of world commerce, had crashed so far and so fast that producers in Wyoming were willing to pay someone 19 cents a barrel to take it off their hands. It was worse than worthless, it had become a burden.

A thousand miles north west, in Alberta, Canada, home to perhaps the world’s single largest deposit of hydrocarbons, a similar story was playing out.

Last week, if you so desired, you could have purchased one of Canada’s estimated 1.7 trillion barrels of oil, for just $5. In other words, 158 litres of the world’s most vital commodity, would set you back less than a pint of beer.
