The Internet of Things... monitors you

Why The Internet of Things is about to change your world

The Internet of Things, IoT for short (or even Thingternet in some quarters) is the ideal that every object in your life is web-connected and communicating with each other. This home network can include items as mundane as a coffee mug, smart appliances such as a washing machine, heating and lighting controls, or even sensors attached to your children and pets.

It’s the chance to create your own personal nanny state by digitally controlling and monitoring almost every aspect of your life through apps or a web browser – and in true Terminator 2 Skynet tradition, once the system starts learning, it will do things for you automatic-ally… hopefully without thinking mankind is its enemy.

For example, IBM pictures your perfect morning: your alarm wakes you at the correct time after checking your schedule and adjusting itself for traffic and transport delays. Your coffee machine begins brewing, the heating and hot water turn on (adjusting the temperature according to the weather) and the car starts de-icing the windscreen.

Connected gadgets capable of some very cool tasks were everywhere at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The smart thermostats and smoke alarms from Nest Labs are probably the most notable, so much so that Google bought the company for $3.2bn (£2.2bn) this week.

Also grabbing CES headlines was Kolibree’s connected toothbrush – designed to outsmart your dentist by keeping tabs on what’s happening in your mouth. It’ll also keep an eye on the whole family – great for parents.

Then there’s the privacy issue; hackers could start rifling through your digital dustbins and don’t forget Google’s acquisition of Nest has essentially invited the data-mining kings into another area of your home.

More than 750,000 spam emails sent from fridges and TVs

US-based Security firm Proofpoint claims to have uncovered the first proven Internet of Things cyberattack involving household "smart" appliances.

More than 750,000 spam emails were sent from more than 100,000 home gadgets between December 23, 2013 and January 6, 2014, including internet routers, televisions and at least one refrigerator which was compromised and used to launch the spam messages.

As it says at the start of this video, "Your next refridgerator may know more about your diet than your doctor [does]". Don't worry - the IoT will be able to send reports direct to your doctor. And dentist. And......

Actually I just got an email from a fridge in Nigeria.  Said it had been left a load of dosh (and a pack of out of date sausages) by its late father the Head Fridge in Lagos.  It just needed me to transfer 5K to its account in the Cayman Islands and I would get half the inheritance plus all the sausages.

Thought I'd give it the cold shoulder.  ;)
