In the red zone in Sotiria hospital, Athens – a photo essay

Despite the fact that Greece’s hospitals have in recent years born the brunt of austerity measures, the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic has been heralded by some as an example to others. The photographer Achilleas Zavallis reports from Athens, in the intensive care red zone of Sotiria hospital

VE Day: Berlin marks end of WW2 in Europe with unprecedented holiday

Berliners have been given an unprecedented public holiday, to mark the end of World War Two in Europe but also liberation from Nazi rule.

Not since reunification has a German city acknowledged 8 May as a day of liberation in this way; some Berliners are unaware of its significance.

A street party and several events have been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The holiday is one-off and is not being held outside Berlin.

But there are growing calls for a public holiday to be held across Germany.

Greece to Promote Itself as Safe Travel Destination in New Campaign

Greece’s safety, as a country and tourism destination to travel to, will be the highlight of a promotion campaign to be announced next week, according to Greek Deputy Minister of Tourism Manos Konsolas.

“After the announcement of the health rules by the National Public Health Organization (EODY), we will be promoting Greece both as a safe country and as a safe destination,” Konsolas said.

“Tomorrow the Tourism Ministry will announce its proposal to EODY,” he said.

Greece’s proposal to the EU on safe travel is expected to be announced by EODY next Friday, May 15.

Referring to Greece’s seasonal hotels, the deputy minister said they would open on July 1 as long as the frequency curve of coronavirus cases does not resume. “This is also the case for campsites,” he said, underlining that announcements will be made on May 18.

I have to be honest, i like him as a guitar player, but does this warrant a front page news, with all that is happening? i seriously doubt it, unfortunately the uk has a problem with celebrity worship, this enforces my opinion.

I gather the Ainos National Park Management Agency has been abolished under the controversial new environmental bill recently passed in the Vouli. Management of Ainos now passes to the Management Unit of the National Park of Zakynthos, Ainos and Protected Areas of the Ionian Islands, based on Zakynthos.

Both this and the waste collection and disposal service seemed to work well, perhaps the new understanding is, "If it ain't broke, change it so it will be."
:dunno:

Mega shark caught off Kavala

A basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) weighing 330 kilos, was caught by trawlers off the northern port city of Kavala and transported to the central fish market, local reports said on Friday.

The basking shark, the second-largest living shark after the whale shark, was caught on Thursday.

The story sparked minor controversy in the local community, with some praising fishermen for a fine catch and others expressing their opposition, given that it is a protected species.

It was not yet clear on Friday whether the shark was accidentally caught in the fishermen's nets or was deliberately hunted down.

Also known in Greece as the pilgrim shark, these whoppers feed on plankton and are pretty harmless to humans:

Bit of an odd one regarding the Basking shark, years ago, a Basking shark caught of Plymouth would be sold for £70, fins for the Chinky chippy, the rest catfood, times have changed thankfully, i live (now) and fish and sail back in the UK, on the West coast, we have lots of Baskers between us and the IOM, no one touches them now, to have a Basker come along side you in a small boat is an amazing sight, they are totally harmless plankton feeders, i may be getting old and soft, but they should be left alone IMHO. :)
