British motorists on the continent face £640 speeding fines from today

Hundreds of thousands of British motorists will face fines for speeding in Europe under new rules coming in on Saturday.

For the first time, UK drivers who get caught by speed cameras going too fast on roads in countries including France, the Netherlands and Belgium will face fines of up to £640.

In at least 14 EU countries, including France, the vehicle owner is ultimately liable for fines, even if they were not driving at the time of the offence.

You would think from reading the article that British drivers are being singled out for speeding fines and that and that nasty foreign drivers are being let off scot free by their own cops to drive as fast as they like while Brits will have queues of cops driving behind them just waiting to pounce.  And by the same token it's "a quirk of European law" that apparently means that slimey Europeans won't have to pay us a penny in fines.  Trust those Brussels bureaucrats to exempt themselves.  Er... actually that would be the quirk of British law described later as speeding being being the fault of the driver which means we don't know who to prosecute unless they tell the cops.  That might be because it was the only single clause in the entire UK statute book was was not decided in Brussels.

And don't forget the perfidious French and possibly some others make it illegal to have speed camera warnings activated in your car's satnav, which may be why "In just one year, an estimated half a million UK motorists will face prosecution for driving offences in France alone."  Nothing to do with going to fast because they left too late to get back to the ferry on time.

Mind how you go Monsieur! ;)
