More than 6 million euros will be distributed to the residents of Cephalonia, the Ionian island that suffered significant damage in a large earthquake in January, the Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies (HAIC) said on Friday.

The association has recorded a total of 415 claims of damages to insured buildings from January's 5.8-Richter quake, the HAIC said, adding that the majority related to structural problems.

Residents of Paliki, the western peninsula of Cephalonia which was badly hit by two strong earthquakes earlier this year, are being asked to leave the hotels they moved to after their homes were damaged by the tremors as the island gears up for the tourist season.

Authorities on the island are keen to make the most of what is expected to be a record season.
