Greek workers unhappiest in the EU with working conditions

Most employees in Greece view working conditions as bad, feel they have worsened in the last five years, are unhappy with their workload and are the most dissatisied with their work-life balance in the European Union, a Eurobarometer survey has found.

Eight out of ten people (82%) in Greece describe their working conditions as "bad", the highest rate in the European Union.

The poll found that Greece is the only country where fewer than half of all working respondents (38%) are satisfied with their current working conditions.

Moreover, 88% - against the highest rate in the 28-member bloc – said that working conditions had deteriorated in the last five years.

It also found that 38% of Greeks are dissatisfied with their working hours, the highest rate in the EU, where the average is 19%.

Greek employees are also the least likely to have been consulted about health and safety issues in the workplace in the last year, with only a quarter saying they had, compared to an EU average of 62%.

The report also found that 82% of employees in Greece work full time, above the EU average of 76%.

The survey did not include about wages and pay. Last December, the Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) said that one in every two companies was not paying its staff on time.

Stress clearly emerged as the most important perceived risk at work (for 53 percent of working respondents), according to the survey.

In addition, dissatisfaction regarding workload, pace of work and long working days (more than 13 hours) is more widespread than other issues.
