No holidays until August without more 'air bridge' details, warn tour operators

our operators have put paid to the idea of a sudden resumption of summer holidays, warning they need up to six weeks notice of changing travel restrictions to take travellers away again.

The Government has hinted at plans to announce “air bridge” deals by the end of the month, with a view to allowing overseas travel for the first time since March in early July.

But travel firms that have spoken to Telegraph Travel have called the Government’s approach to the return of summer holidays confused, nonsense and incompetent.

Coronavirus: Lockdown to be relaxed in England as 2m rule eased

Pubs, restaurants, hotels and hairdressers can open from 4 July in England, when social distancing rules will be eased.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said people should remain 2m apart where possible but a "one metre plus" rule would be introduced.

Two households in England will also be able to meet indoors and stay overnight - with social distancing.

The prime minister warned that all the steps were "reversible".

Coronavirus: UK must prepare for second virus wave - health leaders

Health leaders are calling for an urgent review to determine whether the UK is properly prepared for the "real risk" of a second wave of coronavirus.

In an open letter published in the British Medical Journal, ministers were warned that urgent action would be needed to prevent further loss of life.

The presidents of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, Nursing, Physicians, and GPs all signed the letter.

All too familiar story from the USA, this time involving a young Greek-American, Giorgos Zapantis, 29, who was killed by police on the evening of 21 June. According to the police report officers were called to a domestic residence where they found a man wielding a sword. He was subdued by Taser and taken by ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Relatives dispute the official account and say that, although he had suffered mental health issues, he was unarmed when tasered. Giorgos was the only son of Elias Zapantis, originally from Skala, and Athanasia Kostoubardis from Poros, and was brother to Elevtheria. There's an appeal by the family to help fund the unexpected funeral costs on gofundme.com/f/george-zapantis-memorial

Elderly Greeks Shun Online Banking, Prefer Standing in Line

In 2020, the age of the Internet and technology, 20 percent of Greeks over 60 years old would switch banks to stand in line and carry out transactions to avoid trying to do it online, a survey has found.

It’s not much of a surprise to people who live in Greece as many Greeks won’t use a computer or cell phone to do business or pay bills, preferring to queue in often long lines at utilities and other public services.

Unemployed Greek Hotel Worker Witnesses Daughter Collapse from Hunger

A 9-year-old girl in Rhodes fainted from hunger earlier in the week as she was waiting with her unemployed mother at a local bakery to buy some bread, in an incident which highlights the desperate state many employees in the tourist sector are now facing in Greece.

The girl, who has not been named, is one of the twin daughters of the single mother who is now unable to meet the needs of her family financially, since the 800-euro unemployment benefits given by the government to all hotel workers in the beginning of the health crisis has been exhausted.

The local charity “Agia Sofia,” took the little family under its protection and immediately offered basic food necessities to them.

The charity’s president, Sofia Mania, told dimokratiki.gr that the unfortunate woman is not asking for handouts, but would like a job so she can once again support her family with dignity, as she has been doing for many years.

Residents surrender Thai city to monkey gangs headquartered in an abandoned cinema
The Thai authorities have stepped in to reintroduce sterilisation programmes as people cower in their homes

Residents of the ancient Thai city of Lopburi are living in fear of marauding gangs of monkeys, as thousands of primates brawl with each other, attack shops, and take over the streets in search of food during the coronavirus lockdown.

Lopburi province and the antics of its macaques have long lured hordes of foreign tourists who pose with them for selfies in exchange for free bananas.  But as tourism dried up because of the global pandemic so too did the monkeys’ food supplies, prompting a violent turn in their behaviour.

Local efforts to offer the monkey mobs some nutrition may have backfired as some say a sugary diet of fizzy drinks, cereal and sweets has fuelled the animals’ sex lives, making their population grow even more....

Good to see another community copying the Katelios example (or was the other way round?).
