Kefalonia Fisheries FoS

The Greek fish farm producer Kefalonia Fisheries has gained the Friend of the Sea (FoS) sustainability stamp, following an audit by an independent certification body.

The audit found Kefalonia was compliant with all the FoS criteria for sustainable aquaculture.

Only floating cages with a semi-automatic feeding system are installed in order to reduce the impact on the surrounding ecosystem. The distance between cages and seabed allows for seabed protection. Neither GMO nor growth hormones are used, FoS said.

The two production sites are located on the island of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, between Italy and Greece.

The company produces and sells 8 million fries and over 3,000 metric tons of fish per year. Over 80% of the production is exported, mainly to France, Italy and Germany as well as the United Arab Emirates and the US.
