Unrestricted hotel development?

The multi-bill that was introduced recently in Greek Parliament, contains 50 reforms to four key sectors of Greece: tourism, food processing, building materials and retail.

In regards to the Greek tourism sector, the new bill abolishes restrictions (distances, bed capacity, etc.) that previously existed for the construction of hotels, thalassotherapy centers, conference centers and ski centers.

According to the bill, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) will have no say in regards to the suitability of a piece of land aimed to be used for a tourism establishment. Also, tourism enterprises will no longer be required to receive approval for their prices from the GNTO or the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.

Restrictions that stand for licenses of tourism coaches will also lifted, as are limitations on automobile rentals. The new bill will make it possible to rent cars under 1,500 cc with a driver to transport passengers. In addition, hotels and car rental companies will be able to perform transport services until now exclusively provided by taxis.

The bill allows online travel agencies to provide the exact same services offered by traditional-type travel agencies and also lifts limitations on moorings and anchorages of yachts.

The multi-bill will be voted in Parliament on Sunday, 30 March.

Always thought being picked up at (and taken to) the airport by the hotel minibus would be a good selling point. Better still, it would really piss off those lazy bas****s lying under the pine trees by Skala beach!

A lot of the changes seem extremely sensible and apart from vested interests it's hard to see what "protection" they offer.  I followed the links and eventually found the full OECD report on competition and regulation in Greece - all 391 pages.  It covers food processing, retail trade, building materials and tourism.  Obviously not light reading but gives the background to the proposed changes and shows the mess that is Greek business.
