St. George's Castle closed?

Latest unconfirmed reports are that the Castle of St. George will be closed mid-summer. Unclear why.

Is there any truth in the rumour that the caves and Melissani are also being closed to complete the set??!  ;)

Tony

PS Note to intending tourists: this is actually a joke on how Greece can sometimes be a little lacking in the organisation department, e.g. not getting round to fixing the road to Myrtos beach after the earthquake in January until well into the tourist season.  There's plenty to see and do on Kefalonia even if the castle and the beach are off for a short time.

Seem to recall it was closed most of last summer, opened by volunteers when the big cruise boats came in. Hopefully the latest news is incorrect but, at the risk of repeating myself (and for the benefit of new readers)... getting reliable information out here...

Seems funding to pay the site staff has been found, Castle should be open from today.

Would it be so bad if it wasn't staffed?

What do the staff do except open tge lock in morning, tell people what time it closes and then lock up?

We went end of May and castle was open there were quite a few people wondering around. Then of course to Kastro Taverna for lunch.

In an ideal world, probably not. But unstaffed the place would probably be ripped apart block by block to build new 'traditional' tourist villas and, until it was reduced to the ground, what was left would be covered in spray paint reading Gate 13.

The Castle was unlocked when we went to view at the end of May. There was a person sitting in the kiosk reading a book when we entered.
I believe that opens from 10.00 -14.00 and then 18.00-20.00.
Like all Greek public Museums and tourist attractions it is Closed on Mondays!
