Babesiosis: First UK case of deadly tick-borne disease discovered in England
Two people living on south coast hospitalised with rare infections

The UK’s first known case of a potentially deadly tick-borne disease has been confirmed in England.

It is caused by a small parasitic arachnid found across China and Europe, known as B venatorum, which scientists say was first detected in UK ticks in 2013.

While the parasite can cause a range of illnesses including Lyme disease, it is notable for causing two rare illnesses in particular — babesiosis and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

A couple of incidents at sea around kef: yesterday around noon the body of a 56 y-o man was recovered from the sea at Emblisi beach, near Fiskardo. Around the same time at Mounda beach an 88 y-o foreign national visiting Greece was injured by the propellers of a motor boat driven by an 64 y-o tourist. Injured man taken to hospital, other bloke arrested.

Seems there will be a TV film crew on Kef and Ithaki in the next few days making a TV ad for the islands, sponsored by the Chamber of Kefallinia & Ithaka. Tag line is "We love Kefalonia, we love Ithaka'. Or, in Greek, known as "Agapame Kefalonia". Presumably for the internal Greek market.

Looks like stories could have got mixed up. Apparently there was a similar incident the day before on Skala beach involving a man hit by a propeller and taken to hospital. The incident on Mounda beach was a woman, taken to hospital with an arm wound. She will be released from hospital this afternoon after treatment and checks.
