Greece to open up wreck of Titanic’s sister ship to divers

Divers will be able to visit the sister ship of the Titanic under plans to ease restrictions on some of Europe’s most coveted underwater wrecks.

The Britannic, which was requisitioned and converted from a liner into a British hospital ship in the First World War and sank after hitting a mine in the Aegean, will be opened to recreational divers under proposals from the new Greek government.

Under the legislation, to be voted on next month, divers will be permitted to visit ships, submarines or planes that sank in Greek waters between 1860 and 1970, relaxing tight restrictions designed to protect ancient wrecks from being looted for antiquities.
