Iconic Plaka Bridge in Epirus Stands Proudly After Reconstruction

A legendary single-arch bridge in the northern Greece region of Epirus, the bridge of Plaka, which collapsed after torrential rains in 2015, has been completely restored connecting again the two sides of the Arachthos River.

Located in Epirus’ famed Zagori region, the 18th century bridge was reconstructed with local stone and mud using the building technique of Kostas Bekas, the master craftsmen who first erected it.

It now connects the villages of Tzoumerka with the Kastanochoria.

Drake's Island fortress to reopen to public after 30 years

An island is reopening for a one-off public tour after more than 30 years of closure.

Drake's Island, located about 500m off the Plymouth coast, is a former fort, prison and adventure centre, but has been closed to the public since 1989.

Some 105 tickets are being offered for the 15 March tour, with funds going to St Luke's Hospice.

New owner Morgan Phillips plans to open the island fully in the future, with plans for a museum and heritage centre.

Wood burners: Most polluting fuels to be banned in the home

Owners of wood burners, stoves and open fires will no longer be able to buy house coal or wet wood, under a ban to be rolled out from next year.

Sales of the two most polluting fuels will be phased out in England to help cut air pollution, the government says.

Bags of logs sold in DIY stores, garden centres and petrol stations often contain wet wood - a type of wood which produces more pollution and smoke.

The public should move to "cleaner alternatives", the government says.

The changes will mean:

*    Sales of bagged traditional house coal will be phased out by February 2021, and the sale of loose house coal direct to customers will end by 2023
*    Sales of wet wood in small units (less than 2m cube) will be phased out from February 2021. Wet wood in volumes greater than 2m cube will also have to be sold with advice on how to dry it before burning
*    Makers of solid fuels will also need to show they have a very low sulphur content and only emit a small amount of smoke.

It is not banning wood or coal burning stoves.
