A ministerial decision introducing a new mandatory star rating system for hotels in Greece was published on Friday in the Government Gazette.

The decision focuses on hotel services and other technical requirements that hotels in Greece must fulfil, particularly those of higher categories.

According to the decision, hotels in Greece will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Each hotel is classified into one of the five categories if they follow the minimum standards and collect the minimum number of points required for classification.

According to the new classification scheme, hotels will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 stars and/or keys. Each hotel is classified into one of five categories according to set standards and collects the minimum number of points required for classification. The hotels and rooms will be issued certification applicable for five years.

Under the certification scheme, five-star hotels will have to pay a fee of five euros per room, apartment or suite, to the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels. Four-star hotels will be required to pay a four-euro fee, three-star hotels three euros while two-star hotels, one-star and rooms in key categories 2, 3 and 4 will pay two euros.
