Former Hellenic Postbank vice-chairman Marios Varotsis is expected to be the first suspect to be questioned on Monday in connection to the probe into unsecured loans made by the lender.

Varotsis was arrested last week after the completion of an investigation into the bank’s activities.

His deposition comes in the wake of the lender’s former chairman, Angelos Filippidis, being arrested in Turkey on Saturday. Filippidis is being held in Istanbul, pending his extradition.

A total of 25 people have been charged with fraud and money laundering in connection with the scandal miring TT, which issued half a billion euros in suspicious loans between 2007 and 2012, according to a prosecutor’s report.

The general secretary of the Justice Ministry, Giorgos Sourlas, has asked prosecutors to investigate armed forces procurements over the past decade following indications that supplies have been purchased at hugely inflated prices, it emerged over the weekend.

According to claims by Sourlas, a former health minister, a pyrolysis machine acquired in 2002 for the country’s armed forces was purchased at more than double its estimated value, suggesting that officials benefited from the overpricing.

A series of prosecutors’ investigations into state defense procurements have revealed that officials pocketed millions of euros in kickbacks to secure deals for particular firms.

A council of judges has ruled that the charges levelled against former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou in connection to the alleged tampering of a list containing the names of Greeks with deposits in Switzerland have not expired under the statute of limitations... which means that Papaconstantinou will now stand trial in a special court. He is accused of removing from the so-called Lagarde list the names of four of his relatives who had savings at an HSBC bank branch in Geneva.

One in Three Greek Physicians Found With Unjustified Incomes

As part of a full-scale operation conducted by the Greek Financial and Economic Crimes Unit (SDOE) targeting money laundering in the health sector, it was revealed that hundreds of physicians all over Greece were involved in tax evasion and black-economy practices.

According to the newspaper “Eleftheros Typos,” the opening of bank accounts owned by physicians working in the Greek National Health System revealed huge amounts which couldn’t be justified by the physicians’ legal incomes. It is suspected that these amounts come from bribes and illegal practice outside the NHS.

The results of the investigation show that at least 1 in 3 of the investigated doctors has been found with unjustified amounts in his bank accounts. In many cases, the black-market money discovered, amounts up to thousands of euros.

Utterly utterly shambolic and disgraceful.  At least Papaconstantinou may get his come-uppance.
