New Democracy Legislation Freezes Tax Evasion Probes, Prosecutions

The Greek Parliament controlled by the ruling New Democracy government has okayed a bill effectively giving a pass to thousands of alleged tax evaders in a move critics said was aimed at benefiting Greek bankers facing breach of trust charges and undermining anti-money laundering laws.

It also backs away from trying to hunt down legions of tax cheats as successive governments have been unable to rein them in despite a critical need for cash during a long-running economic crisis and now facing the aftermath of COVID-19.

In a report, The Financial Times said opponents of the move that came after the government promised to go after tax dodgers could set a worrying precedent, with rival parties, lawyers and prosecutors critical.

Critics said the amendment rewards high-profile tax evaders, curbs the independence of public prosecutors and will taint Greece’s reputation as it tries to attract fresh investment from abroad to help rebuild the economy, the report said.

According to EODY there have been eleven cases of coronavirus detected on Kefalonia in the past few days. Most have returned from Athens or Northern Greece but one couple haven't travelled and must have caught the virus locally.

Guinness recalls alcohol-free cans over contamination fears

Guinness is recalling cans of its newly-launched non-alcoholic stout because of contamination fears.

The brewer described the recall as "precautionary", but said "microbiological contamination" might mean some products were unsafe.

The company urged anyone with cans of Guinness 0.0 not to drink them.

Two cats killed after fireworks were strapped to them and set alight
Bodies of both animals found with significant burns

At least two cats have been separately killed after yobs strapped fireworks to their backs and set them alight.

The bodies of both animals were found with significant burns and the devices still attached following the attacks in Rotherham, South Yorkshire and Queensferry in Deeside.

Two other similar incidents were reported in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and Kenilworth, Warwickshire, but in both those cases the cats are thought to have survived.
