Blyth gran trapped in Greek hospital after quad bike accident left her in a coma

A Blyth gran is trapped in a Greek hospital after a quad bike accident left her in a coma.

Tracie Harrison, 52, was on the holiday of a lifetime in sun-drenched Zante with best pal Wendy Sears when tragedy struck.

The pair were turning a bend on a quad bike when they hit a hole in the road, flipping the bike and leaving Tracie with catastrophic injuries.

...the insurance company say they do not cover quad bike accidents and are refusing to pay out for Tracie, leaving the family facing a bill of thousands of pounds.

Presumably we do not need to bother with holiday insurance, a bit of crowd funding will suffice :oki:

From what I understand, most travel insurances do not cover quad bike accidents. They may have had insurance but not read the small print.

Exactly! there is enough information about telling you NOT to hire a quad.
Whilst I have every sympathy for the young girl, it is about time people started accepting responsibility for their actions instead of relying on other people to bail them out, this is not the first time similar accidents have requested crowd funding.

According to the Guardian there were (at least) two quad crashes on Zakynthos last month:

British tourists have been warned against hiring mopeds and quad bikes abroad after a spate of deaths serious injuries.

Kieran Roche, 19, from Swindon, died in a quad-biking accident on the Greek island of Crete last month, and two British women were seriously injured in a quad-bike crash on the island of Zante.

Natasha Stevens, 17, an art student from Lancashire, suffered severe injuries in a separate quad-bike accident last month, also on Zante.
https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2018/aug/03/tourists-warned-risks-hiring-mopeds-quad-bikes-abroad

As it goes on to say, the true number of quad related tourist injuries is probably unknown as many won't get reported to insurance companies.

Yes, you would've thought so, the press remind us every summer with the latest gory stories.

As BeeTee posted here,

British tourists are being warned against using mopeds or quad bikes abroad - after a series of accidents and deaths.

Maybe the ABTA campaign will remind those with short-term memories.

(or, er, maybe not...)  :hmm:

Perhaps a little explanation may help for those that don't understand, if you hire a scooter you need a bike licence for the smaller ones and a full bike licence for the bigger bikes, so most peeps who hire one are expected to have some experience of driving one, now provided you do not hit a car or a wall, you may slide off one on a corner, this normally results in nothing more than gravel rash, it hurts but you will be more careful next time.
Now to the quads, quads are great on the beach or in a field, give it some power and it will slide, when you take a corner too fast on the road, the quad will slide, then grip suddenly, it will throw you up and out, it is called a high side, anyone who watches motorcycle racing will have seen this, it is Very dangerous! it causes serious injuries, i have personally watched  gangs of youngsters on Zakinthos racing one and other, it will always end in tears.
sorry to ramble on, in my younger days I raced bikes and have ridden quads, i thought i would try and explain, it may save someone getting hurt.

We plunged 30ft down a cliff in quad bike crash... we're lucky to be alive

Simon and Dianne Barrow, of Redhouse, lost control of the bike and plummeted 30ft down a cliff.

The pair have been told by doctors that they won’t ever get the full use of their arms back again.

Since the horrific accident they have found out that their insurance company Aviva has refused to cover the medical bills because the firm classed riding a quad as an ‘extreme sport’. That has left the couple with a bill for £2,400.
