The Durrells

ITV has commissioned a new six part series, The Durrells... based upon Gerald Durrell’s classic trilogy of Corfu memoirs including the much loved ‘My Family and Other Animals’.

The story focuses upon Louisa Durrell whose life is in meltdown. Her husband died years ago and his money has all but run out. Her four unruly ‘children’ Larry, Leslie, Margo and Gerry are going off the rails. Gerry, 11, is about to be thrown out of school; Larry is a would-be novelist but the worst estate agent in Bournemouth, and the middle two are hitting adulthood like a car-crash. It is the 1930s, and a woman’s options are limited.

Louisa realises she can carry on struggling, marry someone comfortably off but oppressive, or make a radical change and escape... from a domestic pressure-cooker, British weather, uptight Englishness and narrow horizons. This is a rescue mission to somewhere her family can heal itself before it’s too late.

She tells them she is taking them to Corfu. There is fighting and outright refusal, especially when they find out there is no electricity - how dare she drag them off to a Greek wilderness. But Corfu is cheap, and an untamed paradise.

There are worse places to rescue a family - an island fringed with warm, azure sea, the land teeming with wildlife and offering an abundance of oranges, lemons, olives and kumquats.   They discover friendship where they least expect it while they struggle to overcome near poverty, the language barrier and the occasional pang for ‘pudding island’.

But Louisa’s biggest challenges come as ever from within the family. Bright and courageous but realistic, she knows they will bring most of their crises with them, and add a few more.  Budding writer Larry hasn’t stepped up to be the man of the house and his cutting sense of humour and lack of filter often creates havoc.  Leslie, with a mother complex, is fascinated by guns almost as much as he learns he is fascinated by girls.  Margo is a walking bundle of neuroses until feminism stirs; while Gerry is endlessly inquisitive about animals and people.  Happy to spend hours staring at beetles on a wall, he can go missing for days on epic nature trails and turns the house into a zoo.

Not that Louisa herself is perfect. She drinks too much and has a temper. She is not too proud to break down and weep. Only in her 40s, she says she is happy to be single, but nobody believes her…

Set in 1935, each of the episodes will be written by Simon Nye.

Filming will take place in Corfu from September 2015. Details of casting will be announced closer to commencement of filming.

Sounds a re-do of the 1987 BBC series, which must say I thoroughly enjoyed

Haven't read the book or seen any previous TV - but would certainly see it this time.

Presumably as with Cap'n Corelli owners of donkeys and wooden saddles for same will be coining it in with hire deals!   ;)

More Sun, Sea and Animals as the cast of The Durrells return to Corfu to film the second series of the ITV drama

In the new series Larry (Josh O’Connor) continues to pursue his passion for writing despite a new romance getting in the way; Leslie (Callum Woodhouse) decides to explore his entrepreneurial spirit; Margo (Daisy Waterstone) remains boy crazy and makes a play for someone thoroughly unsuitable; and Gerry (Milo Parker) who prefers animals to people is delighted when he discovers an otter is living close to home.

The first series of The Durrells achieved a peak audience of 8.2million viewers/a 33% share of viewing and averaged 6.9 million viewers across the series, making it ITV's highest rating new drama series of 2016.

Filming will commence in Corfu at the end of August, with some scenes being filmed in London.

I wasn't terribly impressed with the screenplay and I imagine the second series will be more of the same. ITV screened Home Fires on the same evenings, which was a far better drama, with some fascinating storylines. Why on earth does ITV make another series of The Durrells and leave viewers with unfinished narratives in Home Fires?

I agree with you Jean. The original one was more about Gerald Durrell and the animals and less about his Mother and flings.

The original series was based on the three books by Gerald Durrell.  The new series is an interpretation of how other things happened around Gerald.

Here’s how The Durrells could continue – even when the family leaves Corfu
The Second World War ended the Durrells' years on Corfu, but actor Callum Woodhouse says this doesn't have to be the end of the story

With each series of ITV’s The Durrells we move ever closer to 1939 and the outbreak of World War II, which forced an end to the family’s idyllic years in Corfu.

In series three it is already 1937 – but could the drama actually continue into the war years and beyond?

The Durrells will return in 2018 with series three

What do we know about the real-life Durrells and their adventures in Corfu?

Historian Michael Haag reveals the women written out of The Durrells’ family history

The real story is probably a lot more interesting than the fiction books and TV series.

ITV returns to Corfu for a fourth series of hit drama, The Durrells

Described as “pitch-perfect period escapism” by The Guardian and “a warm-hearted creation with a steely core and mischievous twinkle” by The Times, The Durrells has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2016. It continues to be one of ITV’s highest rating dramas, with the first episode of the latest series consolidating at 6.7m with a 26% share.

Fans were rooting for romance between Louisa and Spiros during the finale of the third series, which aired earlier this month. With the pair finally declaring their feelings for one another, it seemed that love was on the cards until the return of Spiros’ wife made for a teary ending. Will the couple be able to overcome the obstacles to rekindle their relationship in the new series?

THE DURRELLS season four might be the last of the ITV series as producers have reportedly ‘axed’ it after deciding there was “nowhere left to go”. Will the charming 1930s family drama’s fourth run be its last?
