Temperatures shown are the monthly average of the highest daily temperature.
Rainfall has been measured at Valeriano and total rainfall is calculated from August to the following July.

A roundup of weather for 2020

Fairly average temperatures and rainfall until September.

Then on 18th September we experienced the first hurricane in living memory, with high rainfall and winds exceeding 100mph. Another storm followed a few days later to bring the rainfall to 373mms for the month, although many parts of the island had more than this.

December was the warmest I had recorded for 19 years, but also the highest rainfall, with 537mms. Overnight minimum temperature did not fall below 11c, another record.

A roundup of weather for 2019

The year on the whole was particularly warm, starting June and through to the end of the year. August was the hottest I have recorded in 18 years.

We had a very wet January and a wetter than usual May. November and December were extremely wet with 753 mms recorded for both months, before becoming very dry in 2020.

A roundup of weather for 2018

The year as a whole recorded the highest rainfall I have measured so far at 1631 mms, with June being much wetter than usual (the average rainfall for the UK as a whole is around 1200 mms).

February was very wet and record rainfall with 418 mms.

April was an extremely warm month with a top temperature of 32c and no rain!

June and July had record rainfall and were relatively cooler, but September made up for this and was one of the warmest.

A roundup of weather for 2017

The highest rainfall I have recorded for November and December together.

20 mms of rain recorded in August was due to a storm on the morning of 30th. Not all of Kefalonia experienced rainfall however.
July and August had some very hot periods, but this was not so evident in the averages for each month.

January 2017 continues to be extreme, with the second lowest temperature and the second highest rainfall that I have recorded.
Another extreme in March, the warmest and driest.

Thanks Jolly Roger for ur great work. Notice that November rainfall was the second highest since u started recording. Think it was probably even higher than our Scottish figure and that normally takes some beating!!!!!!!

Thanks Jolly Roger for ur great work.
And thanks for the latest monthly update. Not sure it always felt that mild but it sure could've been worse (even on Kef). Be interesting to see how Feb fares. Snow, anyone?

Some interesting comparisons.

Rainfall at Heathrow for 2013 was 576 mms
Rainfall at Camborne, Cornwall for 2013 was 1070 mms
Rainfall at Kefalonia for 2013 was 1206 mms

Rainfall for England and Wales for January 2014 was 173 mms
Rainfall for Kefalonia for January 2014 was 213 mms

and January was the wettest in England and Wales for over 100 years!

er, the Kef figures... are they what you've recorded or is that 'Greek accounting'?

Based on my readings Maik. Obviously these will vary depending on the location. I do not have access to the airport weather station, but I wouldn't expect too much variation.

What is going on with the weather? May, July and August have been the coolest I have recorded in 13 years. June was the second coolest in 13 years. I only recorded 1 cm of rain in July, but many places had a lot more. Unheard of in July!

Temperatures shown are the monthly average of the highest daily temperature.

Thanks for the latest update, Rog. Be interesting to see the new one. A strange summer in many ways!

Thanks Roger.  The summer was 2-3 deg cooler by your data.  Very odd what with global warming etc.  ??Part of the austerity measures?

Rog's data probably correct, didn't feel quite as unbearably hot this July and August as usual.

Global warming... probably caused by a load of politicians spouting a lot of hot air about global warming.

Actually, I think 'Global Warming' is a misnomer. What it actually means is that there are likely to be more extremes of weather in the future. Some places will be warmer, some cooler, some more wet and some more dry.
The UK had a pretty decent summer, but there are predictions of extreme cold this winter.

Hi Roger,
Are there any statistics available for June?

Yes, they (you know who I mean, the talking heads who are making money out of it) have changed the name to Climate Change, so they can claim they got it right whatever happens.

Thanks for the update, Rog. Just as I remembered it: a wet September and a pretty wet October.
November's been nice... so far...  :hmm:

Roger, appreciate the time and effort it must take to maintain your weather chart, but really missing your previously timely updates.......any chance you can add July, and now August, too?

Now that's interesting, didn't expect sea temperatures to be that warm over winter.

Thanks for the latest update (http://goinggreek.info/index.php?topic=10), Roger.  A slightly strange year, weather-wise, for Kef! Wonder what next year will bring if El Niño appears, as currently predicted.

I don't normally scroll down, so hadn't seen this comment before now Maik. All these temperatures are taken in fairly shallow water, so may be a bit warmer than further out. If I can manage to swim again through the winter, I will try to go out a bit further!

I think we can see a trend developing. Not so much Global Warming, but more extremes. This is why I started doing an annual roundup of the figures, to highlight this. In fact, if anything, temperatures in Summer appear to be cooler than in the past.

Yes, it was a shock to the system to have to put aircon on in May! It was the highest May temperature in the last 18 years at least.

I have been unable to complete weather records for the year 21/22, but it seems everyone has been complaining about a very wet winter. Out of interest, I have taken local rainfall records to compare with previous years. From August 21 until the present date, there has been a total of 1438 mms. Comparing this with records from the previous 16 years, there have been four wetter years.
