UK weather forecast: Heavy rain, gales and flooding to cause transport disruption and risk of power cuts

The UK is set to be lashed by “heavy and persistent” rain, gale-force winds and potential flooding.

The Met Office has forecast increasingly rainy weather for the next few days, with a downpour moving eastwards over England, Scotland and Wales on Thursday.

While Friday will see a bright morning, heavy rain and gale-force winds are forecast to reach parts of England and Scotland by the evening.

The weekend is likely to remain unsettled, with showers or longer spells of rain particularly in the west and south.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for rain and wind over the next few days, cautioning that homes and businesses could be flooded, transport delays are expected, and power cuts could occur.

UK weather: Snow forecast as eastern chill sees temperatures plummet across country
Dusting likely to be limited to higher ground in northern regions, Met Office says

If snow does fall it will be limited to higher areas of northern England.

Yet snow did fall last month in parts of the country. County Durham and other areas of northeast England saw a dusting of the white stuff during what meteorologists described as some of the coldest October days for a decade.

UK weather forecast: Britain to bask in sunshine before plummeting temperatures bring snow

Much of Britain will enjoy sunshine and warmer than average conditions this weekend, before a dramatic drop in temperatures brings snow next week.

The Met Office is forecasting some “exceptionally mild” weather in the days ahead, but the warm southerly winds will suddenly give way to a bitterly cold wind from eastern Europe on Monday – leading to overnight frosts and snow on hilly areas.

UK weather forecast: Snow and sleet to sweep country as Met Office warns of early winter blast
Forecasters monitoring situation as icy conditions and freezing fog expected in coming days

Britain is braced for a barrage of wintry weather, with snowfall predicted in several regions and the potential for more icy conditions as the week wears on.

Snow fell in Cumbria, Derbyshire and East Sussex on Tuesday and overnight, with easterly winds causing particularly chilly conditions for many.

More unpleasant, late-autumn conditions are expected over the next few days. Showers will be seen across all regions on Wednesday, with the heaviest downpours in eastern Scotland.

Snow could fall on the highest areas of England, Scotland and Wales, while those living closer to sea level are more likely to see sleet – rain and snow mixed.

Snow and freezing temperatures expected as cold air from Scandinavia sweeps country

Snow, freezing fog and gale-force winds are expected to hit the UK this week as cold air sweeps in from Iceland and Scandinavia.

The Met Office said night-time temperatures could plunge to as low as -5C in some areas although most of the country will hover around freezing point.

“Many of us will be having to scrape the frost off our cars but it is not going to be bitterly cold,” said meteorologist Craig Snell.

Amber weather warning issued as snow and freezing rain forecast in UK

A rash of weather warnings have been issued across the UK for the start of the weekend as a collection of rain-bearing frontal systems sweep in from the Atlantic and meet the very cold air that has sat across us for the end of the working week.

This meeting of air masses will create some hazardous winter conditions over the next 48 hours - giving, most notably, a period of snow, mainly over higher ground, with the greatest accumulations and impacts in Northern Scotland.

Perhaps more significantly, however, there is also the likelihood of a period of widespread freezing rain, particularly for upland areas between Central Scotland and the north Midlands with the main risks being from Saturday afternoon. Amber warnings have been issued.

These warnings sit within a broader Yellow warning for snow and ice which covers most of Scotland and Northern England, extending into East Wales, the South Midlands and East Anglia and lasting into Sunday morning.

Freezing rain is rare in the UK, and this event being so widespread is more unusual still. Those on the roads can be particularly badly affected with black ice, falling branches (through sheer weight of accumulated ice) and damage to power lines.

World will approach record-breaking temperatures in 2019, says Met Office
'The forecast for 2019 would place next year amongst the five warmest years on record, which would all have occurred since 2015'

The rise will be the result of human-driven climate change combined with modest warming from the El Nino weather phenomenon in the Pacific, which pushes up temperatures further, the scientists said.

UK weather forecast: Beast from the East could return with heavy snow and freezing temperatures
Most of UK enjoyed sunshine on Tuesday – but forecasters warn of another Siberian cold snap
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/uk-weather-forecast-latest-beast-from-the-east-sudden-stratospheric-warming-met-office-a8717641.html

Scary title, but if you scroll down to the bottom of the article it says:

Quote
Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge said there was nothing forecast in the next week or so that could indicate any change like the Beast from the East.

Colder weather is expected to arrive in the last week of January, with an increased chance of frost, fog and snow.

So there we go: the Beast from the East could return - but probably won't. Not yet awhile, anyway.

Snow set to blanket UK as Arctic blast brings ‘dramatically colder’ temperatures

Snow could fall “almost anywhere” in the UK this month as temperatures plunge “dramatically,” according to forecasters.

The Met Office said a blast of Arctic air would end the recent spell of unseasonably warm weather this week, beginning a colder period that is set to last into February.

Temperatures will plummet to below freezing across the country at the weekend, with -5C expected even in warmer southeast areas.

Forecasters said it was too early to tell if there would be a repeat of the Beast from the East.
