UK weather forecast: Britain faces new Beast from the East in what could be one of coldest winters in 30 years
First two months of 2020 could rank as seventh coldest in three decades, scientists say

So say some scientists, so far the Met Office reckon it could be a pretty normal winter (see end of article).

UK weather: ‘Danger to life’ flood warnings issued as country braces for torrential rain

Danger to life warnings have been issued as parts of Britain face two more days of heavy downpours ahead of snow and the aftermath of Hurricane Lorenzo.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place until midnight on Monday covering Wales and the West Midlands, and dozens of flood warnings and alerts have also been issued.

A further warning for heavy showers is also in place from 6am to 8pm on Tuesday covering the south of England, South Wales, the Midlands and parts of East Anglia.

Thundery downpours with the possibility of hail are expected across the South West, moving to the South East by the afternoon.

The remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo, a former category 5 storm in the central Atlantic, could also cause high winds to reach the UK by the end of the week.

UK weather forecast: More than two inches of rain expected to fall as severe warnings issued for England
Heavy rainfall brings risk of flooding and travel disruption

Three flood warnings in southwest England and more than 30 flood alerts have been put in place, causing fears of travel disruption at the start of the week.

The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain across central and southern England, including London, Birmingham and Manchester, for Monday.

Between 40-60mm of rain could fall in some parts of England, forecasters said, with up to 25mm expected widely.

Although it is too early to predict which exact areas will see the heaviest rain, the Met Office said southern parts of England are most likely to see “significant rainfall”.

UK weather: Homes evacuated after mudslide as ‘danger to life’ warnings issued

Homes have been evacuated and roads flooded as torrential rain plunged the north of England into chaos, with more severe weather expected over the coming days.

Residents of 35 homes in Mansfield were urged to leave as a precaution after a mudslide threatened to engulf their properties, while some homes in South Yorkshire have been submerged by nearly 10 feet of water, with people forced to abandon their cars.

Severe flooding left hundreds of people trapped in Yorkshire’s largest shopping mall ahead of an annual Christmas concert on Thursday evening.

Thousands arrived at Rotherham’s Meadowhall mall to enjoy a line-up of former X Factor singers and DJs, but many soon found themselves trapped as the fast-flowing River Don dramatically burst its banks, compromising several routes around the complex.

Soon any remaining exits were gridlocked and police were advising people not to leave the shopping centre, handing out sleeping bags on the first floor as flood defences were erected around the complex and contractors worked to pump out floodwater.

Flood warning expires this morning but still plenty of water around.

Edit: More than 100 flood warnings in place after deluge
