Microsoft retires Skype Classic on September 1 2018

The Microsoft Skype team announced today that it started to roll out an updated version of Skype that will replace Skype Classic (version 7.0).

Microsoft reveals in the announcement that any Skype version that is not the latest version that Microsoft released -- version 8.0 at the time of writing -- will stop working after September 1, 2018.

To avoid potential service interruptions, Microsoft notes that users and system administrators should update older versions of Skype to Skype 8.0.

Skype Classic, otherwise known as version 7.0, not only works, but it works well.

On the other hand, Skype 8.0, which has some amazing features such as HD video and screen sharing, media galleries, iPad support, call recording, and more, is just generally disliked.

I think many businesses use Skype, including where I work. All landlines where removed from our offices earlier this year and everybody issued with headsets. Instant messaging, screen sharing etc part of day to day work. I just remember to twiddle me mouse every so often to show I'm "available" when sharing (chitchat gossiping) with my colleagues or putting washing on etc when working from home. ;)
