ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greek authorities say a landslide at a popular beach on the western island of Zakynthos has resulted in at least one injury, while coast guard officials were seeking to determine whether there were any people missing.

The landslide occurred Thursday on the Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, on the northwestern coast of the island. The cove features limestone cliffs towering above the beach of white sand and crystalline water made famous by the wreckage of a small cargo ship washed up on the beach since the 1980s.

The coast guard said one foreign woman was injured and was being transported to a local hospital. Local media said witnesses reported a large rock initially fell from the cliff into the sea, creating a large wave that capsized small boats.

A tourist was injured on Thursday following a landslide at the world-renowned beach of Navagio in the Greek island of Zakynthos.

He was transferred to the Zakynthos General Hospital, while an emergency team from the local Fire Brigade (EMAK) is searching under fallen rocks for other possible victims.

Seven injured, none seriously; no-one reported missing but still searching, according to ekathimerini.com

Coast guard closes emblematic Greek beach after rockfall
Quote
The Greek coast guard on Friday closed a world-famous beach on the holiday island of Zakynthos after seven people were injured in a rockfall.

All vessels are banned from approaching the beach, which is accessibly only by sea, and from anchoring in the bay until further notice.

Navagio beach is named after a shipwreck lying just a few meters off the coast and is known throughout the world for its tropical-blue bathing waters and scenic white-sand setting.

Seven people were injured on Thursday after a part of the cliff overshadowing the beach gave way. Their injuries were not life-threatening, though a 37-year-old Czech tourist did sustain a spinal injury that will be checked by a specialist in Patra in western Greece.

Iconic Greek Beach Reopens After Landslide

The Navagio beach in the Greek island of Zakynthos reopened on Saturday to visitors after a landslide earlier in the month that caused light injuries to three tourists.

Local authority officials say that the beach is now safe despite warnings by experts that further landslides could occur.

A team of scientists from the University of Athens have recommended that the beach should be closed completely to the public.

Following a visit to the beach last week, a team from the university’s Department of Geology opined that more landslides can be expected in the area.
