Brexit and illegal aliens

Brexit will have an effect on UK nationals living in Greece and visiting Greece. But it will also have other implications.

Story in the Independent about invasive species such as grey squirrels and muntjac deer. After 29 March the Invasive Alien Species Order 2019 makes it illegal to release non-native species into the wild - this includes 'alien' animals that have been injured in the wild, rescued and recovered. According to rescue groups, these animals will have to be destroyed.

Not so, says the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Healthy animals taken from the wild may be kept until the end of their natural lives, under licence, provided that they are prevented from breeding or escape. Except that is not always practical.

Defra says the order is being brought in to protect the country’s ecosystems and protected species, such as the red squirrel which is under threat.
