Early end to the tourist season

The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic and other countries’ decisions that residents returning from holidays in certain destinations must quarantine – or even the prospect of such a measure – are leading Greek tourism to an early shutdown.

The UK government may have decided Thursday that Greece is a safe destination, after all, and that Britons on holiday in Greece may not need to quarantine upon their return, but the prospect of such a measure led to massive cancellations in reservations.

That was to be expected. No one wants to go on vacation if they have to quarantine when they come back. And the UK is the number one source of tourists for Greece.

I heard there were lots of Greeks returning to Athens, etc, Sunday on the ferry out of Poros.

Concerns on Kef for the four occupants of a little motorboat hired out yesterday and not returned. Coast guard and private boats have searched the sea area around Argostoli, where the boat was hired, but have found nothing significant. According to some reports, the hirer used Croatian ID documentation but this has turned out to be a forgery. From what I can make out, this is a little putt-putt motorboat, not powerful enough (or comfortable enough) to get any great distance.

Allegedly the boat has been found on a secluded beach on Levkas, no clues as to whereabouts of four occupants.

Greece: 1 killed, 3 hurt in engine-room blast on ferry

A crew member has died and three others were injured following an engine-room explosion Monday on a ferry at Iraklio port on the Greek island of Crete.

There were no passengers on board when the blast happened on the 33-year-old Blue Horizon ferry, which is used to service the route between Crete’s main port and Piraeus, near Athens.

Concern grows over safety of quad bikes on islands

Concern is growing over a significant number of accidents, some of them fatal, involving all-terrain vehicles (ATV), or quad bikes, a popular mode of transport among tourists on the islands, amid lax enforcement of rules relating to their rental.

In the summer of 2019, 48 tourists were injured in accidents on the Aegean islands involving ATVs, three fatally. This year, one person has died and at least 10 have been injured.
