These Firefox Add-ons will help keep you secure on the 'net and are easy to use. Click on icon for more info:

disconnect Disconnect: blocks >2,000 third-party websites from tracking you across the web
betterprivacy BetterPrivacy: removes ever-lasting LSO 'super cookies'
ublock origin
uBlock Origin: blocks intrusive adverts and can easily be set to block tracking and known malware websites.
wot Web Of Trust: indicates website safety reputation and throws up a warning page if you click on a dodgy link.

Adblock Plus, BetterPrivacy and WOT will open a set-up page after installation,
you can amend this later in Firefox, if desired, by clicking on:
Menu > Add-ons > Extensions > Preferences

Change the default 'new tab' page

By default, opening a new tab page will display visited web pages. This can be easily changed so that a new tab page will open e.g. a Google search page. In the Firefox browser address bar type:

about:config >
promise to be careful! >
type browser.newtab.url in the search bar >
under Preference Name double-click on browser.newtab.url >
change string value to e.g. https://www.google.co.uk >
OK

Disabled in Firefox 41 on, to restore that functionality use New Tab Override from https://addons.mozilla.org/
