Patras Hospital |
Πανεπιστημιακό Γενικό Νοσοκομείο ΠατρώνPanepistimiako Yeniko Nosokomeio Patron |
There are three hospitals
in Patras: Agios Andreas Hospital (split site) Olympion Hospital of Patras (private medical center) University Hospital, Rio - most likely the one you want Panepistimiako Yeniko Nosokomeio Patron - University General Hospital Patras - is on the outskirts of Patras at Rio, just off the E55 highway. From Kefalonia it's possible to reach it by ferry and car, bus or train; ferry and bus is probably the least expensive option. |
Getting to University General
Hospital Patras by car: From Poros: Levante Ferries run daily ferry services to Kyllini - schedule The ferry crossing takes about 11/2 hours, by car from Kyllini to the hospital about 11/2 hours, total around 3 hours Route map and directions from Kyllini to the hospital from Google From Sami: *currently*, Levante Ferries are running a daily ferry direct to Patras - schedule The ferry crossing takes about 31/2 hours, by car from the port to hospital 15-30 minutes, total around 4 hours From the port follow signs for Athens > Rio > University / Hospital |
Getting to Patras by KTEL bus: Via Poros: KTEL Kefalonias run daily bus services to Patras from Argostoli/Lixouri/Fiskardo/Sami via the ferries to Kyllini Ferry crossing takes about 11/2 hours, bus from Kyllini to Patras about 11/2 hours, total time Poros - Patras around 3 hours Note: This is not the Athens bus, this bus terminates in Patras, Athens bus may / may not stop in Patras / at a different location Via Sami: The situation with the Sami - Patras ferry provision is very fluid, presently there is a Sami - Patras service. Scroll down for KTEL Kefalonias bus schedules and more info re bus & ferry |
Patras to the University Hospital From Patras you can get to the hospital by taxi or bus, or by train to Rio and then taxi / bus / walk (about 30 minutes walk) The number 6 bus departs Patras from the junction of Ermou & Korinthou (see map below) The bus heads out towards Rio along Korinthou Street, stopping to pick up more passengers if there's room Check it's going to Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο (Panepistimiako Nosokomeio - University Hospital) usually it's a bendy bus Board at the front of the bus Best to buy a ker-ching ticket from a periptero before the journey (not all periptera sell them), cost (November 2015) 1.70 Possible to pay the driver but it costs a bit more (2) and slows things down, have the right change if possible as the driver might not Monday to Friday term-time buses run every 10-15 minutes morning to evening, weekends / holidays the service may be less frequent Buses can get very crowded, the 'queue' tends to resemble a rugby scrum and it may not be easy to get a suitcase on the bus The bus stops outside the hospital, which is just past the university: there's a big sign on the building and nearly all the students will have alighted before the bus reaches the hospital The journey from Patras centre to the University Hospital takes about 30 minutes Outside the hospital main gate there's a ticket booth for return tickets but it may not be open, it's best to buy in advance, i.e. when you buy ticket to hospital (tickets aren't date specific) Check return bus is going to Patras (not Rio) The bus will return along Maizonos Street, parallel to Korinthou (both are one way streets) If you're heading for the bus station it may be best to alight at junction of Agias Sofias and Konstantinoupoleos and walk down to front Otherwise stay on bus until last passengers alight just before junction of Maizonos and Ermou On certain days/ at certain times it may take a different route and terminate somewhere other than Maizonos-Ermou-Korinthou Allow plenty of time and, unless you know Patras well, be prepared to find a taxi. |

For
Outpatients (or Casualty) it's easier to walk around the
building than going in the main entrance. There's a small
snack bar and mini shop in the Outpatients reception area. For the other departments and wards it's probably easiest to go in the main entrance, where you'll find a reception / information desk - probably not staffed, few speak English. On the left is the In-patients check-out office, on the wall opposite is direction signage (all in Greek). Turn left and walk past the In-patients check-out office, through the swing doors are the lifts. The two lifts directly in front of you are for staff only, on the corridor to your left are two patient & visitor lifts - possibly only one will be working. |
Receipts Pretty obvious but keep receipts/tickets for travel, etc, as you may be able to claim on IKA / private health insurance |
Registration As an In-patient or Outpatient you'll likely have to register so take IKA health book if you have one, or at least IKA / AMKA number If you have IKA you'll probably need to take your health book to get any prescriptions on IKA It's a very big hospital, signs are in Greek, not everyone speaks English, arrive early and be prepared to be lost / misdirected |
In-patients Nurses are kept busy, not much time for friendly chats with patients, even in Greek - many nursing / support staff don't speak English Meals are provided (and are quite OK!) but ! there's no tea trolley ! Sheets provided; pillow cases, toilet rolls and drinking water NOT provided (take coloured / patterned pillow cases) Bottled water, toilet rolls, etc, available from on-site mini-shops in the refectory area and in the Outpatients reception area Refectory, snack bar and mini-shop on 1st floor above main entrance refectory portions are quite big and inexpensive Most beds have sockets on wall strip above bed (useful for 'phone chargers) Pay phones (card phones) dotted about, phone cards available at mini-shops Visiting times vary ward to ward, don't seem to be rigorously enforced Doctors generally seem conscientious, friendly and most speak (enough) English |
Accommodation
near the hospital There are many hotels around Rio and Patras, including: Pension Nicos is close to the port and bus stop for no. 6 bus to the hospital It's very basic but inexpensive, clean and is near shops and places to eat Reception is on third floor, along with a roof-top terrace (no ground floor rooms, no lift) Castello Hotel is more up-market, more expensive and very close to the hospital More accommodation available via Achaia Hotel Association, see below for details Note: take your passport, you may not get a room without suitable ID. |
Eating
in Patras Feraiou Riga (cuts across Pantanassis - Patreos- Ermou) - is a busy pedestrian street with many popular (trendy) bars and restaurants Finding a 'Greek taverna' is surprisingly difficult in central Patras but there's a good, inexpensive, souvlaki shop on Pantanassis If you have the time (and interest) there's some worthwhile sights to see: |

Notes re bus / ferry
services As at mid-December, 2015: Ferry departs Poros @ 08:30, bus arrives Patras approx. 11:30 Arrive at hospital (by bus) approx. 12:30 Leave hospital around 19:00 (bus) / 19:30 (taxi) latest (not Saturday) Bus from Patras to Kyllini departs 20:30 Sunday-Friday (17:00 Saturday), ferry arrives in Poros aprox. 23:30 (20:00 Saturday) Times likely to change at Christmas/New Year, Easter, mid/high season, etc. When is Greek Easter? For KTEL bus & ferry service check bus, not ferry, schedule: e.g. no bus on 13:00 Poros-Kyllini ferry Best to buy/book ticket(s) in advance (especially in high season) Price includes bus to Poros port (if required), ferry ticket, bus Kyllini-Patras If you're picking your ticket(s) up at the port, arrive 30-15 minutes before departure time as there's likely to be a queue for tickets You may not be able to buy a two-way ticket so may be best to reserve the return ticket upon arrival at the bus office in Patras If you need to cancel / re-arrange date of return ticket you can usually do so provided it's done in advance As at November, 2015, the cost of a journey Poros - University Hospital with KTEL / Kefalonian Lines is: 9.40 Poros-Kyllini - ferry 8.30 Kyllini-Patras - bus 1.70 Patras-Hospital - bus 19.40 One-way 38.80 Return Seats on the bus are numbered, seat number printed on ticket, as is the bus number (usually in small circle in front windscreen) Location of seat numbers vary bus to bus, may be on headrest, on overhead luggage rack or on seat frame of aisle seats In practice, most people sit in their designated seat, out of season there's usually a few empty seats Luggage stowed in the hold is left on the bus when you get on the ferry Ferries have basic snack bars (coffee tends to be strong, tea weak), cost of a coffee & toastie about 2.95 Smoking permitted on the open deck areas. |
Things change Info believed to be correct November, 2015. Check schedules, prices, weather reports, road works, news of strikes, etc, prior to travel. Things change. |
