Greek students at the barricades in dispute over education bill
Government accused of taking law and order agenda to new heights with plans for campus police force

Before the sun had risen over Thessaloniki on Wednesday, Stergios Grigoriou and his fellow students had surrounded the Greek metropolis’s main university site and barricaded every entrance to it.

The act of defiance was not a one-off. In a country where protest politics reign large, students are on a mission: to overturn a bill that, in the name of bringing order to unruly universities, foresees the creation of disciplinary councils and a special campus police force. “Our demand is simple. The educational bill has to be withdrawn,” said Grigoriou. “It’s a repressive law that far from serving our needs only serves the fake needs of a conservative few.”

In his third year of a business administration course, the 20-year-old admits he now spends more time “on the frontline” than behind his books. But he is far from alone. Nationwide there have been growing student protests against the legislation, which is seen as rolling back rights gained since the restoration of democracy in 1974.

One of Europe’s smaller countries, Greece has 24 state universities and more than 600,000 students, in a reflection of how tertiary education is seen as a lever to social mobility. But chaos also abounds. Tales of lawlessness on Greek campuses – particularly in Athens – are legion, attributed in part to a law that long prohibited police from entering university grounds, in memory of those killed in 1973 when the colonels’ regime violently crushed an uprising at the Athens Polytechnic.

Although repealed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis within weeks of him becoming prime minister in 2019, the legacy of the so-called asylum law lingers. In urban centres, campuses previously known as no-go zones for police have become synonymous with crime and decay. Drug peddling, sexual assault and the presence of anarchists and other anti-establishment groups on university grounds have all been blamed for driving ever more Greeks to seek higher education abroad.

Google Chrome and MS Edge were updated recently to fix a security flaw that was actively being exploited. Ideally Chrome should have auto-updated by now but worth a manual check:

Quote
To check what version you have, click the three-lines icon (the “hamburger menu”) in the top right corner. For Chrome, go to Help > About Chrome. For Chromium simply click About Chromium.

(In either browser, you can also put the special URL chrome://settings/help into the address bar.)

The version you are looking for is 88.0.4324.150 or above.

If you aren’t up-to-date, use the Update Google Chrome option on Windows or Mac to force an update.

If you’re on Linux and your version of Chrome or Chromium is provided by your distro maker, check back with your distro for update details.

Note for Edge users. According to Microsoft, this bug affects Edge, but Edge version numbering differs from that in Chrome. The Edge version number that fixes this vulnerability is 88.0.705.63.

Adobe fixes critical Reader vulnerability exploited in the wild

Adobe has released security updates that address an actively exploited vulnerability in Adobe Reader and other critical bugs in Adobe Acrobat, Magento, Photoshop, Animate, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver.

Adobe advises customers using vulnerable products to update to the latest versions as soon as possible to block attacks that could lead to successful exploitation of unpatched installations.

In most cases, users can update their software by using the auto-update feature of the product using the following steps:

By going to Help > Check for Updates.
The full update installers can be downloaded from Adobe's Download Center.
Let the products update automatically, without requiring user intervention, when updates are detected.

A lot of concern on Kef regarding a possible 'explosion' of coronavirus cases. Of particular concern are a second employee of the Municipality of Argostoli, a 58-year-old male, his wife and their 9-year-old daughter; also two brothers from Sami (a 9-year-old student at the Primary School and a 17-year-old student at the Lyceum), their mother who works in the school complex of Sami and five other adults from Sami who belong to the close circle of the 78-year-old who is hospitalized. Sami Gymnasium-Lyceum will remain closed for fourteen days as will sections of two schools in Argostoli. Mass rapid testing is going ahead in Karavomilos and residents of Sami are advised to pay strict attention to coronavirus safety procedures. The 78 y-o male from Karavomylos was yesterday air-lifted to the mainland and transferred to hospital in Pyrgos.

Coca Cola apologises over Sidcup fox culling

Coca Cola have apologised for the aproach taken to control foxes at their Sidcup factory site, and said they are in the process of finding an alternative, more humane, control measure.

Yesterday it emerged that the company were planning a mass culling of foxes to control the fox population at their site on Cray Road.

Campaigners and local residents reacted furiously to the measures, with a 'Stop the Cull' movement sweeping across social media to stop the alleged mass shooting.

Allegedly three more cases of coronavirus on Kefalonia, although it could just be EODY confirming three cases previously reported. Difficult to know. Also an alleged case on Ithaki, the first there.

Meaty meals and play stop cats killing wildlife, study finds
Millions of pet cats are estimated to kill billions of animals a year but grain-free food can change cat behaviour

Feeding pet cats meaty food and playing with them to simulate hunting stops them killing wildlife, according to a study.

Eating grain-free food led to the cats depositing a third fewer mouse and bird corpses on doorsteps, while just five to 10 minutes of play with a toy mouse cut the killing by a quarter.

There are 7.5 million cats in the UK and they are estimated to kill about 100 million animals a year. The toll is billions in the US and 230 million in Australia. Mammals such as mice, rats and rabbits make up two-thirds of the UK kills, a quarter are birds such as sparrows and blackbirds, and the rest are frogs and lizards.

I thought that the Police had been using computers for quite a while now.
