Twenty five new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8785 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.072 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1383 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9328 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Appears to be a different case from yesterday's report of violence on a Wizz Air Gatwick-Hania flight:

Brothers face £50k bill and lifetime Jet2 ban for 'violent behaviour' on Crete flight

Alfie and Kenneth Springthorpe displayed "unacceptable levels of aggression and even physical violence" on their holiday flight from London Stansted to Crete.

As a result, the crew was forced to head to Corfu so the pair, from Sidcup, Kent, could be offloaded. This resulted in a delay of approximately three hours and 45 minutes before the flight continued safely to Heraklion Airport.

How to see the rare 'superblood moon' this weekend

The eclipse will last just over five hours in total, but the moon will only be red for around 75 minutes while it is completely in earth's shadow.

Most people in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East will be able to get a glimpse of the eclipse.

For those in Britain and Europe, the partial eclipse begins at 2.28am on Sunday 15 May, and it should turn red at around 3.29am and end by 4.54am.

While the image in question was an authentic photo captured by a camera aboard the NASA Curiosity rover on May 7, 2022, the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory told Snopes that, what some social media users interpreted to be a “portal and a wall,” was actually a rock crevice on the red planet.

New £5.8m tree disease lab sends out SOS for public to report pests

The public are being urged to keep an eye out for any signs of disease in local trees, as the UK launches a hi-tech, £5.8m tree laboratory to fight the spread of pests and diseases.

The UK is especially vulnerable to the growing spread of plant pathogens because of warmer, wetter winters, and because it is a hub for global trade. The new research laboratory is set to address these threats by clamping down on pests in the UK and abroad, including the oak processionary moth, emerald ash borer and citrus longhorn beetle.

The Forest Research Holt Laboratory in Surrey – a key part of the new Centre for Forest Protection – will be able to analyse and investigate reports of disease faster and more thoroughly than ever. The public can report sightings via the Tree Alert site, and a specialist will come and look at the tree, or send samples for further testing.

Calling a man ‘bald’ is sexual harassment, employment tribunal rules

Hair loss is much more prevalent among men than women so using it to describe someone is a form of discrimination, a judge has concluded. Commenting on a man’s baldness in the workplace is equivalent to remarking on the size of a woman’s breasts, the finding suggests.

Tourist charged £510 for two drinks and snacks at restaurant in Greece

A tourist has been charged £510 for two drinks and snacks at a restaurant while on holiday in Greece. The woman visited the eatery in the holiday hotspot with her daughter, aged 19.

The incident reportedly unfolded in Mykonos. She fumed: “We spent a beautiful day at the beach but please, warn your future customers that the restaurant-bar we visited, charged us €600 for two cocktails and a portion of crab legs.

“While we knew that the bill would not exceed €200, suddenly they asked us to pay €600!" The woman says she and her daughter refused to pay.

But men stood in the doorway and blocked them from leaving, she claims. The only "additional thing" they had used were some deckchairs for three hours, she added in her scathing rant.

Having been informed by locals this type of incident is all too common in the holiday destination, the mum threatened to file a police report.

She fumed: "Leaving, the locals told me that customers constantly alert the police about similar incidents concerning the specific store, but nothing is ever done."

The Hellenic Initiative Launches “Plant A Tree In Greece”

The Hellenic Initiative has launched a campaign entitled “Plant a Tree In Greece,” which aims to have a measurable positive impact on Greece by reforesting the land and restoring the livelihoods destroyed in the wildfires of 2021.

In response to the crisis in the summer of 2021, The Hellenic Initiative launched an online campaign for wildfire relief and raised over $600,000 from 4,500 donors in 47 countries.

The program furthers THI’s dual mission: crisis relief and economic development in Greece. Trees will be planted to re-balance the natural environment from the damage of the wildfires, as well as to restore the livelihoods of bee, olive, and lemon farmers destroyed by the fires.

THI has partnered with We4All, an award-winning non-profit organization based in Greece for the planting of trees.
