London Euston cat-astrophe averted for train-surfing puss

A cat narrowly avoided disaster after being spotted on the roof of a train as it prepared to depart.

The tabby was seen on an Avanti West Coast train at London Euston, about half an hour before it was due to leave for Manchester at 21:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Passengers were transferred to a replacement train as station staff coaxed the cat from the Pendolino, which travels at speeds up to 125mph.

It took two and a half hours for the cat to move from its perilous perch.

Joe Hendry, Network Rail station manager for Euston, said: "Thankfully curiosity didn't kill this cat, and we're glad it avoided using up one of its nine lives".

Some roads closed tomorrow 08:00-14:00 around the fire station and bus station in Argostoli due to tree pruning in the car park opposite.

Greek ‘pushbacks’ brought to European court after child refugees ‘placed back in boat and abandoned at sea’

Two child asylum seekers were removed from a refugee camp in Greece by officials, taken out to sea on a coastguard vessel and left alone to drift on a motor-less rubber dinghy until they found land, a legal complaint against Athens lodged in the European Court of Human Rights has alleged.

Turkish authorities found two afghan teenagers, aged 15 and 16, paddling with their hands near Kusadasi on the Turkish coast on 9 September after the alleged ‘pushback’ - the practice of forcibly turning those seeking asylum away from the border.

Greece has consistently denied it is involved in pushbacks, with Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi telling Greek media previous allegations were “part of a broader fake news strategy promoted by Turkey, through certain nongovernment organisations and smuggler networks”.

A security defect in Google Chrome that's being actively exploited has been fixed in the latest version, 89.0.4389.72 available for download now: Chrome users can select Menu > Help > About Google Chrome to check the installed version and run a manual check for updates. Otherwise Chrome will auto-update but in the coming days/weeks - may be too late for some. As most browsers except Firefox (and Pale Moon) are based on Chrome it's worth checking for updates for MS Edge, etc. More info at Sophos.com
