Kef fire risk 04/08/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8614 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0500 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1609 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9524 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Body of a fisherman recovered from the sea at Gero Gombou, Paliki, earlier today.

Shroud of mystery surrounding events. The deceased was a 54 y-o professional diver from Kalymnos, an island long noted for sponge diving, who regularly visited Kefalonia on his boat for diving trips. According to his assistant the tube to his breathing apparatus was cut by a passing speedboat, although it appears his account has varied slightly upon re-telling. It appears the equipment was largely undamaged, although it could have been caught but not badly damaged by a passing propeller. Coast guard inquiry continues.

Greek intelligence service admits spying on journalist - sources

The head of Greek intelligence told a parliamentary committee his agency had spied on a journalist, two sources present said, in a disclosure that coincides with growing pressure on the government to shed light on the use of surveillance malware.

The committee's closed-door hearing last week was called after the leader of the socialist opposition PASOK party lodged a complaint with top court prosecutors over an attempted bugging of his mobile phone with surveillance software.

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis made his complaint amid growing concern among European Union officials about spyware merchants and the use of surveillance software.

Google Chrome was updated to version 104 recently, fixes 27 security vulnerabilities, you can read about it on Forbes. Chromium and MS Edge likely to get an update soon.

104 is a bit controversial as some claim a newly introduced feature reduces security, according to Neowin.

Retirees in line for £2,000 state pension windfall
Inflation means the Treasury’s 'triple lock' bill is on track to soar by £24bn before 2024

Retirees are on track to receive consecutive 10pc state pension increases as high inflation is now forecast to remain in double-digits for most of next year.

Pensioners could receive a record £2,052 boost in the state pension over the next two years, as high inflation is expected to deliver back-to-back double digit increases under the Government's triple lock promise.

It means the Treasury’s state pension bill would soar by £24bn before 2024, with the Bank of England predicting that inflation will remain at “very elevated levels” next year.

Global heating means almost every sea turtle in Florida now born female
Rising temperatures have made beach sand so warm that eggs incubate above 31C and are overwhelmingly born female – experts

According to the National Ocean Service, if a turtle’s eggs incubate below 27C (82F), the turtle hatchlings will be male. If the eggs incubate above 31C (89F), the hatchlings will be female. Temperatures that waver between the two extremes will result in a mix of male and female baby turtles.

Researchers also discovered that the warmer the sand, the higher the ratio of female turtles.
