Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9089 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0952 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1002 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9131 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

A very unseasonal visitor in Argostoli this morning: the Costa Deliziosa cruise ship. It seems the passengers were due to visit Ancient Olympia but it was closed for Christmas, so Kef got a Christmas bonus. No news of how much notice the passengers had of the re-scheduling.

Boris Johnson could be back in Downing Street by next Christmas Nadine Dorries predicts

The former culture secretary warned Rishi Sunak that disastrous poll ratings could see him ousted and his predecessor installed in his place.

“I think there is a chance if the polls keep sliding by this time next year we will see Boris Johnson back in Downing Street,” she said.

Mr Johnson was forced out of the top job by his own MPs after a series of scandals, including Partygate.

But Ms Dorries, a key ally, suggested that Conservative politicians could again rally around their former leader, to save their own skins.

"Many of the people who were anti-Boris realise they are nothing without their seat (in the House of Commons),” she said.

And she warned that life post politics would prove very difficult for the dozens of Tory MPs set to lose their jobs at the next general election.

"They have no voice, no one is interested in what they will have to say, not even down at the job centre," she said.

New pilot, 72, mistakes A1 motorway for runway

An inexperienced pilot confused a motorway for a runway while out on his first solo flight at nighttime before accidentally descending to around 300ft.

A report into the incident reveals that the 72-year-old mistook lights on the A1 motorway for the lights on the landing strip on 9 January 2022.

The new pilot had just 233 hours of flying experience under his belt when his aircraft strayed south of Newcastle International Airport and inadvertently allowed the aircraft to descend to 300ft as he searched for the runway.

The incident occurred during the man’s Night Rating test – a course lasting several hours which qualifies pilots to fly at night.

More than 90% of hand carwashes in UK employing workers illegally, study finds
Only 7% had undertaken right-to-work checks and just 11% handed out payslips, Nottingham Trent University research reveals

More than 90% of hand carwashes are likely to be employing workers illegally, without proper pay, records and first aid measures, three years after the government backed a voluntary scheme to tackle abuse in the sector.

Surprise inspections of carwashes in Leicester, Suffolk and Norfolk found only 7% had undertaken right-to-work checks, a legal obligation, or could prove that legal employment rights were being upheld.

Only 6% of the carwashes had written contracts with workers while just 11% handed out payslips so that they could prove they were paying the legal minimum wage, holiday pay or sick pay. Less than half (41%) were registered companies, indicating most are not registered with the tax authorities.

Possibly not a great surprise to many?
