Given the air quality in Thessaloniki, the Angels' white costumes won't need spraying in dirt.

Smyrna review – raw, shocking violence in epic take on Greek-Turkish conflict

This epic historical drama could have been called Once Upon a Time in Asia Minor or Once Upon a Time in Turkey, depending on which side of the Greek-Turkish divide you sit. That thorny geopolitical entanglement is what it attempts to unpick, sometimes too forcefully, in telling the story of the one-time melting pot of Smyrna (now İzmir). It culminates in a shockingly raw depiction of the 1922 massacre and ethnic cleansing of the Greek and Armenian population by Kemal Atatürk’s irregulars after they entered the city.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/nov/28/smyrna-review-greco-turkish-conflict

Filmed in Hios, Lesvos and Athens: here's how it was reported at the time by the Guardian (Manchester Guardian, as was): The destruction of Smyrna – archive, 1922

Showing at various cinemas around the UK tomorrow night (only?), 04/12/22: londonnet.co.uk/films/smyrna/

Accepting I may not have been ready for Daniel Craig not to be James Bond, nor ready for his pathetically poor accent, I would best describe this (for whilst I was awake) as Mamma Mia without a soundtrack.

Mamma Mia without a soundtrack.

Well, that's something to be grateful for, considering how his Bond predecessor tortured Mamma Mia. Maybe Glass Onion needs to be hyped up in the press?

I gather there's a suggestion in the film that Craig's character, Benoit Blanc, is gay. Maybe the next Bond will be, times change:

At a muscular 6 ft 2 in (188 cm), Connery was initially met with disapproval from Fleming, who believed he was an overgrown stuntman lacking the finesse and elegance to play James Bond; he envisaged a suave actor, such as David Niven, playing the role. Producer Albert R. Broccoli—known to all as Cubby—disagreed with Fleming's view, later commenting that "I wanted a ballsy guy ... put a bit of veneer over that tough Scottish hide and you've got Fleming's Bond instead of all the mincing poofs we had applying for the job"

Finally got around to watching Glass Onion, nice to see (a little bit) of Spetses again.

Another one filmed in Greece, The Wedding Veil Journey, one of a series shown on American TV. Filmed around Lindos on Rhodes, according to imdb.com

New Documentary Captures Greek Resistance to Nazis and Holocaust in WWII

“I’m a Greek but it seems I’m kind of different from my fellow countrymen. Most of the people in my family have uncommon names that don’t really sound Greek like Rachel, Daniel, and Nissan. Till the 1940s, these names were not uncommon in my country. But while I was growing up, they were. My grandfather had an uncommon name, as well: Lian. I never met him. Mom describes him as adorable, charming, and funny. His life was just as uncommon…”

This is the introduction to the ground-breaking documentary film “My People” by Anna Rezan, whose grandfather Lian was arrested by German Nazi occupiers in Athens during WWII. Rezan’s Jewish great-grandmother, Rachel, was deported and lost her life in Auschwitz.

“Maestro” aka “Maestro in Blue” is the first ever exclusive worldwide distribution deal for a Greek scripted television series on the streaming platform Netflix and will launch worldwide on Friday, March 17th, 2023.

The television series is set in Greece on the island of Paxos. It follows a musician named Orestis, played by Papakaliatis, who travels to the small Greek island during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to set up a music festival from scratch.

Confronted with the small society of the island, he finds himself involved in a passionate love story that acts as the catalyst for the manifestation of all the social problems that plague an entire group of people. The characters, being connected to one another, are therefore complicit in the developments.

No mention whether it'll be dubbed or subtitled (I'm thinking must be one or t'other??)

Where is Daisy and The Six filmed? Filming locations on LA’s Sunset Strip, New Orleans and Greece
Reese Witherspoon is the executive producer of this series about a fictional band in the 70s

Greek beaches also feature in the series. The cast travelled to Athens and the island of Hydra to film key sequences.

Daisy heads to the car-free isle that first attracted a bohemian cohort, including Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, in the 60s.

Hydra offers up sandy beaches, the harbour of Hydra Town that has a glut of small boats and is overlooked by a hill covered in pastel-coloured homes, and a collection of churches and monasteries.

Those tempted on a trip to Greece by these scenes could combine the capital and the island. Ferries run between the port of Piraeus in Athens run to Hydra year-round.

Daisy Jones and The Six is streaming on Prime Video from Friday 3 March.

Lovely little island but good luck finding a sandy beach on Hydra (or in Athens).

A surprising Greek crime drama series has cracked the Netflix top 10

Usually, the Top-10 list on Netflix is just a roundup of its newest big Netflix originals, sometimes with the odd classic movie that's just been added to the service in there for good measure. However, that's not the case right now.

In the US, the Netflix Top 10 list of TV shows has a surprise entry at number 10: Maestro in Blue.

Why's this surprising? Firstly, it's the only entry in the Top 10 that's not a Netflix Original. All of the other shows are ones created for Netflix.

Secondly, it's the first-ever Greek series to hit Netflix (not including shows based on, or focusing on, Ancient Greek stories).

In the UK, Maestro in Blue isn't on the list, though it is available on the service.

NEW SERIES: The Love Story Of Leonard Cohen And Marianne Ihlen In Hydra

A great and deep love, which turned the eyes of the whole world to beautiful Hydra, was the relationship the famous Canadian composer and singer Leonard Cohen shared with the Norwegian journalist-writer and model Marianne Ihlen.

This massive love affair will be made into an eight-episode TV series.

In a few days, in Hydra - of unique beauty and nobility - where Cohen's house still stands, filming will begin for the ambitious series that will be shown not only in Greece, Norway and Canada but also in Belgium, Great Britain and other countries.
