Kef fire risk 29/06/22: Medium

Eighty seven new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, four on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8894 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0878 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1244 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9193 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Holidaymaker gets shock as Greece heat causes beach bag to catch fire

One British holidaymaker received quite the shock as her beach bag caught fire while she sunbathed in Greece.

Eva Bacchoo showed off the charred remains of her Primark tote on TikTok as she explained what had happened.

"Basically the [metal] buttons had gotten so hot and I started smelling burning," she said. "I turned around to get some water out of my bag because I was thirsty and my bag was burnt to a crisp."

The temperature was around 30 degrees when the fire started.

How Greek Fishermen Are Protecting the Secrets of the Aegean

The sun is setting on the port of Lipsi, as scattered small wooden fishing boats sway from side to side. The water is splashing against the pier as large commercial tourist boats pull into the dock. Local tavernas are setting up for dinner with fresh octopus drying on a line close to a charcoal grill, releasing puffs of smoke.

Close your accounts if you don't like pronoun badges, Halifax tells critical customers
The bank was ridiculed on social media after tweeting a badge reading 'Pronouns matter' in an effort to prevent 'accidental misgendering'

Halifax has told customers to close their accounts if they disagree with its stance on pronoun badges for employees following a raft of online complaints.

The bank was ridiculed on social media after it tweeted an image of one of the badges in a post which read: "Pronouns matter. #It’sapeoplething." The photograph shows a badge with the name ‘Gemma’ with pronouns ‘she/her/hers’ written beneath.

Some Twitter users took issue with the policy but the bank was quick to shut them down, urging them to withdraw their custom if they felt upset.

NHS removes words ‘woman’ and ‘women’ from menopause page

The NHS has removed the words “woman” and “women” from its menopause page as part of an update to increase inclusive language in its web pages.

The latest update comes after the health service removed the same words from its online ovarian cancer guidance earlier this month.

At the time, health secretary Sajid Javid criticised the removal of the word from the NHS’ advice pages and said he did not “think it’s right”.

It's a struggle without petrol, a struggle without trains... but how on earth will we manage without Coca-Cola?  :iroll:

Heinz products off Tesco shelves after pricing dispute

Kraft Heinz, the company behind some of the UK's most popular food brands, has stopped supplying Tesco with most of its products in a dispute over pricing.

Baked beans, ketchup and tomato soup are among the products understood to be affected.

In recent months food manufacturers have reported rising costs, including for energy and commodities, with some warning they would need to raise the prices they charge to retailers. However supermarkets such as Tesco are striving to keep prices low for customers facing a cost-of-living squeeze and shopping more carefully.

"We will not pass on unjustifiable price increases to our customers," a Tesco spokesperson said.

The supermarket chain said shoppers had "plenty of alternatives to choose from".

Exclusive: Head of government Covid rules unit held ‘boozy’ party during Christmas restrictions

The Telegraph learns that ‘dozens’ of officials from the Cabinet Office’s Covid taskforce attended the event to mark Kate Josephs' departure

Met police face legal challenge over Partygate investigation
Jo Maugham, of the Good Law Project, says people want to know why laws seem to apply to them but not to Boris Johnson

Johnson was fined only for attending one lockdown gathering in June 2020 – a party in the cabinet room for his birthday, at which Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, was also present.

Johnson was not fined in relation to other gatherings where he is believed to have been present in November and December 2020 and January 2021. However, some civil servants who attended the same gatherings received questionnaires and fines in relation to those gatherings.

The Good Law Project said it was bringing the case because it believed the public had a right to know the truth about the Partygate investigation and why Johnson’s actions in relation to some gatherings did not attract a questionnaire.

Euro firefighters head to Greece for the summer

The first of a total of 250 European forest firefighters arrived on Monday to assist the work of the Greek authorities during the current firefighting season.

On Friday, 11 leaders of these Euro firefighting units are expected to arrive in order to meet with their Greek counterparts and learn about the Hellenic Fire Service’s operational plans.

The arrival of foreign firefighters in Greece, not in the midst of major fires as has been the case until now, but in advance and before the outbreak of forest fires, is part of a grid of measures and initiatives implemented at the highest levels of government at the end of last year’s disastrous summer.

One in four British pensioners is now a millionaire
Charity calls 10pc rise in state pension 'unfair' after new figures reveal how wealthy pensioners are

Baroness Altmann, a former pensions minister, said many pensioners are asset rich but cash poor and will be heavily reliant on the bumper state pension increase next April to get by.

"It is outrageous to suggest that just because some pensioners live in a house that has risen in value they are very wealthy. Property prices may have gone up but that doesn’t help them to live, they can’t spend that £1m, they live in the house,” she said.

The UK state pension is the lowest in the developed world, she added. "To say that they don’t need to be protected from rising prices is misguided at best."

David Lammy apologises for getting facts wrong about BA strike
Shadow foreign secretary says he wrongly thought staff wanted 10% pay rise, rather than reinstatement of Covid pay cut

In a letter to a constituent involved in the dispute, first reported by the Mirror, Lammy said he had been misinformed, and believed the staff were pressing for a 10% pay rise. In fact, they are asking for the reinstatement of pay that was cut during the pandemic, and protesting against what they say are “fire and rehire” tactics by the airline.
