UK weather: Dozens of flood warnings in place as heavy rain lashes country
Forecasters warn homes likely to be flooded and fast flowing and deep floodwater poses potential danger to life

More than a hundred flood alerts and warnings are in place across Britain as torrential rain lashes the country, with the Met Office warning of further wet weather and travel disruption to come.

In England, homes and businesses from Cumbria to Somerset were urged to take immediate action with rivers running high in more than a dozen locations.

Some places in Somerset and Hampshire had more than a month's worth of rainfall in 42 hours, as the Met Office issued warnings not seen since March.

Amber alerts were in place across much of the North, the West Midlands and the South West. Forecasters said homes and businesses were likely to be flooded and fast flowing and deep floodwater posed a potential danger to life.

UK warned to prepare for risk of winter flooding
Environment Agency urges people in flood zones to plan ahead as Met Office forecasts wet January and February

The next couple of months are likely to be wetter than normal in the UK, experts have warned, raising the prospect of flooding.

The Environment Agency’s executive director of operations, John Curtin, said teams around the country were prepared for dealing with floods this winter in a Covid-safe way.

But he urged people to check if they were at risk and prepare for potential flooding, to protect precious keepsakes such as photographs and reduce the mental health impacts of the trauma of being flooded.

Frosty mornings but no white Christmas for UK, forecasters say
Met Office predicts a ‘seasonal feel’ to the weather after a rainy start to the week

Those dreaming of a white Christmas will be left further disappointed this year after the Met Office forecast no more than frosty conditions for the UK.

Temperatures across most of the country will stay in mid-single figures on Thursday and Friday, and no snow was expected to settle.

Despite a wet start to the week, the Met Office said the mercury would start to fall, meaning people would need to wrap up for their winter walks.

Meteorologist Tom Morgan said temperatures could drop to -3C in parts of England and Wales on Christmas Eve morning.

Temperatures in London and the south of England are expected to reach a high of 6C on 24 December and 5C on Christmas Day. Similarly low temperatures of 4C and 5C are forecast for parts of the north including Manchester.

Morgan said it would be dry for the vast majority of the UK and a cold and frosty start to Christmas Day.

Storm Bella: ‘Danger to life’ weather warning as strong winds and heavy rain forecast for Boxing Day

A “danger to life” weather warning has been issued on Boxing Day, with Storm Bella forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the UK.

The Met Office has warned power cuts and travel disruption could occur over the weekend due to the bad weather.

The forecaster said a storm - which has been named Storm Bella - was expected on Boxing Day and the 27 December, after dozens were rescued and homes and businesses flooded by heavy rain in the run-up to Christmas.

Southern areas of England and Wales have been issued with an amber warning for wind - with forecasters saying flying debris and large waves could cause injuries and danger to life.  Gusts are expected to reach up to 60 to 70mph in exposed coastal locations.

The amber warning - which runs from 10pm on Boxing Day until the morning after - also told residents there was a “good chance" of power cuts, and longer travel times and cancellations were likely.

UK weather: Week-long cold snap and fears of new Beast from the East

Cold arctic air has been forecast to sweep across the UK, bringing “harsh frosts” and bitterly icy conditions for the first week of January.

The sub-zero Siberian weather front is set to be similar to the ‘Beast from the East’ experienced in February 2018, where the UK was battered by heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures.

Snow was already seen falling across parts of London on New Year’s day, and cold weather gripped the remainder of the country.

Temperatures plunging to below freezing overnight means there’s also a risk of icy pavements and roads across Britain.

Motorists, in particular, have been warned to look out for icy patches following collisions on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Hazardous conditions have already caused supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Tesco to cancel shopping deliveries over the last few days, as the Met Office issued yellow warnings for rail and road closures, power cuts and injuries.

UK weather: Snow and ice warnings for England and Scotland

Snow and ice weather warnings are in place for much of England and Scotland after widespread recent snowfall.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings across England and Scotland for Saturday and warned of possible travel disruption.

Parts of England and Scotland could see as much as 5-10cm of snow in higher areas, the weather service said.

A snow warning is in place for south-east England, including London, the east of England and the East Midlands. The Met Office said East Anglia and parts of Kent and Sussex are most at risk of snow.

Major incident declared as Storm Christoph heads to the UK

A major incident has been declared in South Yorkshire as Storm Christoph is set to bring widespread flooding, gales and snow to parts of the UK.

An amber weather warning for rain was issued by the Met Office for Tuesday to Thursday for central northern England, affecting an area around Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield and stretching down to Peterborough.

It has led to a major incident being declared in South Yorkshire in preparation for potential flooding, said Ros Jones, mayor of Doncaster.

Met Office issues five new weather warnings for snow and ice in the wake of Storm Christoph

Conditions are set to become more hazardous going into the final week of January as the Met Office gets ready to put in place five new weather warnings for snow and ice.

Further heavy rainfall, which caused severe flooding in the wake of Storm Christoph, is not forecast until next Wednesday – but plummeting temperatures are expected.

The Met Office said a band of snow will move into south-west England and Wales in the early hours of Sunday morning, spreading to the East Midlands and south-east England later in the day.

Temperatures across the whole of the UK are expected to drop below freezing overnight, with the coldest temperatures in the Scottish Highlands at an icy -10C.

Elsewhere, London and Manchester are expected to get down to -3C overnight and Bristol, Belfast and Glasgow will drop to -2C.

Frosts are expected overnight on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Storm Darcy: Blackouts warning as big freeze hits Britain

Freezing temperatures and "significant" snowfall could lead to blackouts and cuts to water, gas and mobile phone coverage in parts of the country this week.

Storm Darcy brought heavy snowfalls and gale-force winds to southern and eastern parts of England on Sunday with icy conditions set to remain across Britain throughout the week.

Thousands of people were left without electricity after power cuts hit homes in East Anglia, South and West Yorkshire and Durham, while roads were likened to "skating rinks" as the snow set in.

Forecasters warned that "long interruptions" to power, gas and water supplies were likely from Monday across London, the South East and the East of England, along with disruptions to telephone services and mobile coverage.

Simon Partridge, of the Met Office, said the risk of further blackouts would remain throughout much of the week.

Weather: Temperatures could plunge to -8C as snow sweeps across UK
The Met Office warn that nowhere will be ‘immune’ to the wintery showers

Temperatures look set to plunge across the UK with lows of -8C forecast in some parts of the country and the Met Office warning that nowhere will be “immune” to sleet and snow.

Tuesday night will be even colder with temperatures expected to fall to -5C in southern England, meanwhile in Scotland the mercury could drop as low as -8C.

The weather will warm up a little on Wednesday and remain dry and sunny for much of the UK with highs of 10C forecast.

However, the Met Office warns that towards the end of the week colder temperatures will return once again, as a further cold front sweeps down from the Arctic.
