Thurs 24th
"Lightning" Yellow status weather warning on TV weather

I know I'm a pedant, but I'm thinking this is the very first time I've seen a lightning warning as a distinctly separate entity from it's usual association with Thunder

I'm looking forward to a Bright Moon warning, or a Fluffy Cloud warning

UK weather: Snow and gales to batter Britain as temperatures set to plunge to zero

Snow and potentially “disruptive” winds are forecast to hit the UK this month, after the Met Office said Atlantic weather systems could bring stormy conditions to parts of the country.

From early next week winds will strengthen and temperatures will fall, with overnight frosts forecast.

Rain will turn into wintry showers with a chance of snow arriving from the west, the Met Office said, and temperatures could drop to 0C.

UK weather: Cricketers run for cover from snow shower as temperatures set to plunge

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club players were forced to run for cover from a snow shower during a photocall at their home ground, as a cold snap replaces last week's sunshine.

Peter Moores, the head coach, and star bowler Stuart Broad were among the cricketers pictured on Thursday making a swift exit from the Trent Bridge ground, where they were having a team photo taken.

Snow, hail, and ice are expected in parts of England and Scotland, and temperatures are set to plunge to highs of around 10C by the weekend.

The weather shift comes after last week's highs of 20C, which saw Britons dust off their shorts and sandals to enjoy the sunshine.

Yep can confirm rain, sleet and snow showers in the South East today and temperature struggling to reach 4 degrees feeling like minus 6 in the easterly breeze.  This time last week I was digging out the tee-shirts now I'm wearing them as vests under jumpers.  British Summer Time!

UK weather: Snow set to fall again after temperature plunges to -7C in Arctic freeze

More snow is set to hit parts of Britain this week as colder spring weather continues to hit parts of the UK.

An Arctic blast sent the mercury tumbling to -7.5C in parts of Wales last night.

The freezing conditions come days after it was warned London could see its coldest April night in around 70 years.

Warmer weather is set to bring a brief respite before further spring snowy conditions make a return, the Met Office said.

The icy weather this month comes after the UK experienced its sunniest March since 1929.

Conversely, forecasters warned London’s [sic] could see a record April low, with overnight temperatures approaching the -3.1C

UK weather: Snow forecast as Britain set for coldest April weekend in years

Forecasters said “Polar air” as cold as -14C could sweep across Britain in the coming days, due to low pressure “heading off towards Scandinavia” and cold air coming back.

However, the lowest temperature expected to be recorded in the UK across Saturday and Sunday is -5C “at most” in rural Scotland.

UK weather: Temperatures to rise to 20C ahead of Easter weekend

Parts of the UK are predicted to be hotter than many places in the Mediterranean in the days running up to the Easter weekend.

Temperatures, mainly in the southeast of England, are predicted to climb as high as 20C next week.

The recent cold snap – that followed a spell of warmer weather in late March – will dissipate to allow Brits to enjoy some balmy bank holidays.

Further north, people in Scotland and the north-west of England are likely to see rain.

UK weather: Temperatures to plummet to -3C as cold snap hits UK

Temperatures could drop as low as -3C in parts of the UK in the coming days as a cold snap sweeps across the country.

The Met Office said it is likely to be “chilly” overnight in the run-up to May, with rural frost setting in some areas.

But while temperatures could drop below freezing during the night to as low as -3C, the daytime is forecast to bring mainly dry weather with sunny spells.

UK weather: Met Office warns thunderstorms and heavy showers could spoil jubilee celebrations

Thunderstorms could dampen the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations at Buckingham Palace on Saturday.

The Met Office is considering whether to issue a weather warning as it predicts heavy, possibly thundery, showers for parts of England and London on Saturday evening, during the BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace concert.

A total of 22,000 spectators are expected to attend the concert outside Buckingham Palace, which is set to be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and BBC Radio 2.

Treacherous conditions may also put a stop to many of the street parties planned around the country on Saturday.

The Met Office is expected to review the weather situation on Friday morning.

Flash floods threaten to scupper jubilee street party plans

Jubilee party planners are being warned to check their local weather forecast just ahead of events as a warning was issued for flooding.

Southern England is expected to experience thunderstorms with heavy rain and lightning that could bring flash floods and possible power cuts into Saturday morning that could put the dampener on celebrations.

The Met Office said that while many areas in the yellow weather warning area would be unlikely to see a thunderstorm at all, it was not possible to predict where they would hit.

More than 200,000 local events have been planned throughout the four-day bank holiday weekend including street parties, outdoor viewings and lunches.

Met Office issues heat alert warning for England
Temperatures could hit 30C or 34C in the south-east and 28C in north-west

A heat alert warning has been issued by the Met Office and UK Health Security Agency (UKSA) as temperatures are set to soar to 34C later this week.

The forecaster said a level 2 alert has been issued for southern and central England from midnight on Friday until midnight on Sunday, with a lower level 1 alert in place for northern England.

A heatwave is defined as three consecutive days of daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold. The threshold varies in each county.

In March the heatwave thresholds were increased in eight counties by the Met Office in response to the warming climate that made the original thresholds obsolete.

NHS hot weather advice suggests that people stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, keep hydrated, use sunscreen and wear loose-fitting clothes.

Public told to remain indoors as UK hit by ‘huge cluster’ of thunderstorms

The Met Office has urged people to stay indoors where possible as the south of England is struck by a “huge cluster” of thunderstorms.

As temperatures plummeted from Friday’s highs of 32C, the forecaster issued a lightning warning that it has only used a “handful” of times before.

Forecasters warned of “frequent lightning and some difficult driving conditions” on Saturday night, especially for parts of Sussex, Kent, Essex and Suffolk.

The Met Office has only issued a lightning warning three times before, most recently in 2019.

“If you are doing any outdoor activities, move inside if you can – that’s the best advice really,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Stay away from any power lines or anything like that which could potentially be struck by the lightning.

“If you do find yourself in an exposed location stay close to the ground, away from anything that could conduct lightning.”
