Gales of up to 80mph are expected to batter most of the UK by the end of the week.

Temperatures will alternate between freezing and mild because of an "unusually strong" 230mph jet stream, and several parts of the country can expect sleet as temperatures drop to -4c on Tuesday, with potential snow flurries by the weekend.

Earlier this week it was found that 2014 was the hottest year on record, with climate change activists blaming the Government for a 'colossal failure' over making global warming a national priority.

Drivers have been urged to take emergency provisions out with them on Wednesday in case they become stranded on the roads amid some of the most severe weather conditions Britain will have seen so far this winter.

The Met Office has advised drivers to be prepared for disruption and difficult conditions, as they issue ice and snow warnings across most of the country.

RAC spokesperson Simon Williams urged commuters to alter their travel plans to avoid rush hour, and to bring provisions in case they get stranded.

Cyclone expected to hit UK
A cyclone is expected to bring more weather chaos to the UK which has been hit by snowfalls of up to 30cm in parts

Snow has covered areas across the UK and strong winds are now expected to start battering the country as a cyclone hits.

The Met Office has issued warnings of strong winds of up to 60mph to hit the country from Wednesday and the Weather Channel UK is warning of a deep Atlantic cyclone due to hit.

The bad weather is expected to continue into next week with more snow and the lowest temperatures of the winter so far.

Snow closed the A53 in Staffordshire, with driving conditions difficult in parts of the moorlands.

The A53 Leek to Buxton road was closed in both directions near Flash, but reopened later on Wednesday morning.

Lots of snow but slowly thawing. May be dodgy later tonight when it is due to freeze. Brightening myself up though looking at the just announced route of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race May 1,2nd and 3rd.Days 1and 2 will be on the doorstep of our caravan so the kids will be in their element. Hubby is taking orders for bacon butties!!!Trying to think how many we can get in the caravan and awning. Perhaps I can get some bunk beds!!!

I am reliably told that it is my Grandson's Geography teacher's car. Must have been in a hurry-probably late for school as that was in Sheffield and the school is in Derbyshire. Wrecked the homeowners settee!!Good job she wasn't sitting on it at the time!!

Gales and torrential rain forecast after 'warmest weekend of year'
Met Office warns sunseekers to make most of temperatures of up to 17C this weekend ahead of unsettled weather, with gales and heavy rain forecast

Britain is about to bask in the hottest weekend of the year so far as temperatures could top 17C - but forecasters warned of gales and torrential rain from Monday.

With spring sunshine and blue skies, the nation could be hotter than Greece in parts despite it being windy.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicky Maxey said:... "From Monday, it will be unsettled with gales and heavy rain and this is possibly something we will issue a warning around."

That'll do me.  It was great here for a couple of days last week.

Actually when I see these "forecasts" I generally reckon exactly the opposite will happen.   :( .
