New Greece fire breaks out, prompting evacuations

A wildfire broke out in a Greek seaside town northeast of Athens on Monday, burning through brush and pine trees and causing precautionary evacuations, firefighters said.

The latest fire comes after Greece was shaken by deadly blazes last month fanned by a heatwave that officials blamed on global warming.

Around 70 firefighters and 20 vehicles were battling flames on Monday night in the town of Nea Makri, 38 kilometres (24 miles) northeast of the capital, an official for the firefighters' press service said.

A collision between two yachts near Molos Bay, Ithaka, the Netherlands flagged SCARAB and an un-named Austrian flagged yacht, resulted in the Scarab being escorted in Vathy port after it was reported to be taking on water. An independent check found no water ingress but both boats were confined to port until re-certified as seaworthy.

Greece: 5 Arrested After Two-Year-Old Forgotten on School Bus for Hours

Five people have been arrested for placing a child at risk after a two-year-old girl was forgotten alone in a school bus for four hours, police announced on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the little girl fell asleep on the bus on her way to a day-care centre in the seaside suburb of Voula and did not get off with the other children when it arrived. Neither the driver nor any of the staff at the daycare centre noticed and she remained locked in the bus on her own. When she woke, she started crying and was heard by a woman that was passing by, who called the police.

Temperatures to plunge below seasonal average this week

Temperatures will start falling sharply in Greece as of Tuesday, dropping as much as 9 degrees Celcius below the average for this time of year by Thursday, according to the National Observatory of Athens weather service Meteo.

Temperatures will start rising again as of Friday, remaining, however, below average for the season in eastern parts of the country, while heat will return at the weekend.

Currently looking as though it'll drop down to mid-twenties on Kef for a couple of days before rising to high twenties for a week or so. Should be quite sunny for the next week or so.
