Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9100 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1011 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0989 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9082 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

OK, chaps (and chapesses), quick reminder that tomorrow is Valentine's Day, that day when we're made to feel morally obliged to spend yet more money on our insignificant other. And what better way to celebrate it than buying them something unhealthy and fattening - they'll love it!

And if they don't, oh well, nevermind, you'll have to eat it.

Good news if you're in Athens - and there's still time to get there if you're not - tomorrow is the last day of Chocolate Fest '23. Just head down to the Old OSY Depot in Gazi. Open 17:00-23:00

Here's one they made earlier:

Mars Wrigley factory fined after two workers fall into chocolate vat

The Mars Wrigley factory in the city of Elizabethtown was fined more than $14,500 (£12,000) by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The incident happened in June 2022. A hole had to be cut into the bottom of the partly-full tank to get them out.

Bit more violence on the streets of Argostoli yesterday afternoon when a teenager was chased and set upon by a mob of similarly aged youths. Police will, I'm sure, be investigating.

Thousands called animal charity helpline to give up their pets

An animal welfare charity says it has received more than 4,000 calls from people wanting to give up their pets.

The Scottish SPCA said the annual figure had tripled in a single year since 2021.

The charity said it was down to the cost of living crisis, with most callers to its helpline blaming financial issues including vet bills.

It said some people were having to choose between feeding themselves or their pets.

Greece approves disputed museum law seen as antiquity 'export' plan

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni has said the changes give the museums more freedom to plan exhibits and raise sponsorship.

The association of Greek archaeologists has said it will block the law in court.

"Important antiquities could be sent abroad for 50, a hundred years or more," the association warned in a statement.

Greece's culture ministry has been trying for years to broker deals for the repatriation of antiquities without resorting to legal action.

Its chief goal remains the return of the Parthenon Marbles, held by the British Museum since the 19th century.
