Καλό μήνα

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9033 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0938 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1071 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9142 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

The collision between a freight train and an oncoming passenger train occurred near Tempe, some 380 kilometres (235 miles) north of Athens, and resulted in the derailment of several train cars, police said. At least three of the derailed cars caught fire.

Home Greek Home: anyone watch it last night? Total numpty - with a husband, a son aged 20, another 18 and a teenage daughter - spends £100,000 on a house they haven't seen, then finds it's a one up, one down, shack in need of complete renovation (read: rebuilding). But it's on Skiathos, so that's OK. Twat.

Top cyclist fined for killing San Marino minister’s cat with air rifle

The tiny nation of San Marino has been left shaken after a pet cat belonging to a government minister was shot dead by a professional cyclist.

The unfortunate feline was killed with an air rifle by Antonio Tiberi, a 21-year-old cyclist who has won medals in international contests.

He said he was just messing around with the weapon and had not intended to kill the animal.

The athlete’s dismay deepened when it turned out the cat belonged to Federico Pedini Amati, San Marino’s minister of tourism and a former Captain Regent, or head of state, of the diminutive, landlocked republic.

Tiberi has been convicted of animal cruelty and fined €4,000.

Greek police has arrested a local station master who was in charge of signalling over the deadly collision of two trains in northern Greece late Tuesday, that resulted in the death of at least 36 people and dozens of injuries, a police official said.

African dust clouds to settle over Greece until Friday

Large parts of Greece have been shrouded in haze as persistent southerly winds have carried waves of dust from the African continent across the Mediterranean.

Meteorologists said the dust clouds, which have reduced visibility in parts of the country, will linger for two more days.

Jacob Rees-Mogg's child got Covid test couriered to family home during huge shortage
The test was sent by to the MP's house, and then straight to a lab

Jacob Rees-Mogg had a Covid test for one of his children couriered to his home by health officials at a time when there was a testing shortage.

An initial test for one of Mr Rees-Mogg’s children had been lost by the laboratory, prompting Matt Hancock’s special adviser to organise a courier to deliver a new test that night, wait for the child to take the new test, and then take it directly to the laboratory.

Two days before the test was personally delivered to the Rees-Mogg family home, the director of testing at NHS Test and Trace had been forced to issue her “heartfelt apologies to anyone who cannot get a Covid test at present”.

Reports at the time suggested a backlog of 185,000 tests waiting to be processed on September 11 2020, the day after the test was couriered to Mr Rees-Mogg, who at the time was Leader of the Commons.

Ford seeks patent for cars that ditch you if payments missed

A patent application from automaker Ford was published last week for embedded vehicle systems that facilitate an automobile's repossession, including autonomously moving it to a repossession agency.

The patent, which was filed in August, covers more ways to combat non-payment. The least intrusive is a helpful message delivered to the vehicle or a smartphone notifying the user of the delinquency.

If notices go unacknowledged, the system can disable select functionalities of the vehicle or even lock the vehicle out entirely – save for a medical emergency where it could potentially travel to a hospital or ambulance meeting spot autonomously.
