Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9123 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1005 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0961 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9087 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Human error to blame for train crash - Greek PM

One of Greece's worst-ever rail disasters, which claimed at least 43 lives, was due to "tragic human error", the country's prime minister has said.

PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke after visiting the site of Tuesday night's head-on collision between a passenger service and a freight train.

It is still unclear why the two services were running on the same track.

The stationmaster, who is in charge of signalling, denies wrongdoing and has blamed the accident on a possible technical failure.

Trade unions said collisions have multiple factors and the crash had highlighted chronic deficiencies, including lack of staff, broken signals and outdated facilities.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-64817894

Quite possibly human error, I've no idea whether Mitsotakis is an expert on rail disasters or not. However, he might've been better letting an official inquiry decide, rather than risk prejudicing the outcome. With an election ahead it could be claimed he's laying blame on the stationmaster to hide deficiencies in the state railway network.

Ministers considered culling pet cats at start of pandemic, says former minister
Lord Bethell says ‘there was an idea at one moment that we might have to ask the public to exterminate all the cats in Britain’

Ministers briefly considered ordering all domestic cats in Britain to be killed amid fears they could be spreading Covid, a former health minister has said.

Lord Bethell was Matt Hancock’s deputy in the Department of Health and Social from 2020 to 2021.

His comments came after The Telegraph began publishing details of tens of thousands of leaked Whatsapp messages exchanged between Mr Hancock and other senior figures during the pandemic.

Mr Hancock is fighting claims he rejected advice while health secretary to give Covid tests to all residents going into English care homes.

A spokesman alleged the messages provided to The Telegraph by journalist Isabel Oakeshott, who was handed them by Mr Hancock while she worked on his Pandemic Diaries memoir, have been “spun to fit an anti-lockdown agenda”.

Drink ‘thousands of varieties of wine’ to boost immunity and improve mental health
Professor Tim Spector says wine is good for improving gut health and is high in polyphenols, a group of natural defence chemicals

Speaking on the Wine Blast podcast, Prof Spector said people should sample as many grape varieties of wine as possible to pick as many different polyphenols as they could.

“Drink wine, primarily for the pleasure, but at the back of your mind think ‘could I be trying different bottles or varieties that might actually be healthier for me and that I might enjoy?’” he said.

“Diversity is also important; if you take the analogy from food, having a range of different grape varieties in your diet means you are going to be helping different gut microbes inside you and you will increase your gut health and diversity.

“Don’t just stick with the same wine, get out there and try hundreds or thousands of different grape varieties that we generally don’t enjoy.

If you're in London before 04 June you might be interested in seeing Shirley Valentine, the stage play, starring Sheridan Smith as Shirley. Review on thestage.co.uk

Filmed on Mykonos but seems the setting is Crete... according to the review in The Guardian.

Israeli envoy donates blood for victims of train collision

Israel’s ambassador to Greece, Noam Katz, said he donated blood for the injured in the deadly train crash that has claimed the lives of 46 passengers and injured scores.

Greece’s National Blood Donation Center said earlier on Thursday that the “overwhelming” response to a blood drive called to cover the needs of the victims “have been fully met.”

Greek train crash: anger grows as officials admit rail network problems

Although Mitsotakis and others in his administration have been quick to blame “human error”, there is a growing and widespread belief that the tragedy could have been prevented.

“It is not a mistake, it’s a crime,” the opposition Syntakton newspaper said in a banner front-page headline, saying railway unions had long warned of the system’s inherent dangers.
