Post by: Maik on Thursday, 17 February, 2022 @ 04:37:55
Sixty six new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, nine on Ithaka.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1566
1 USD = € 0.8538

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money).
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

The longest word in the world is Greek; 175 letters and 78 syllables

We Greeks are known for very long names, smashing world records, and inventing all manner of stuff first, but not even that could prepare anyone for the world’s longest word which is the creation of one of our ancestors:  Aristophanes.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the name of a fictional dish created by Aristophanes in his comedy Assembly women (Eκκλησιαζουσες).

It consists of with 175 letters and 78 syllables whilst the transliteration has 183 Latin characters.

The word:

Lopadotemachoselachogaleokranioleipsanodrimhypotrimmatosilphiokarabomelitokatakechymenokichlepikossyphophattoperisteralektryonoptekephalliokigklopeleiolagoiosiraiobaphetraganopterygon

Or in Greek:
λοπαδοτεμαχοσελαχογαλεοκρανιολειψανοδριμυποτριμματοσιλφιοκαραβομελιτοκατακεχυμενοκιχλεπικοσσυφοφαττοπεριστεραλεκτρυονοπτοκεφαλλιοκιγκλοπελειολαγῳοσιραιοβαφητραγανοπτερύγων.

UK could ban part-wild hybrid cats after social media fuels boom in popularity

Part-wild hybrid cats could be banned by the UK government, after social media helped bring these extreme breeds to popularity.

With their huge size, powerful muscles and spotted coats, hybrid cats are seen by some as the perfect pet for the social media age. But the growing trade raises concerns over animal welfare and the illegal wildlife black market.

Brains do not slow down until after age of 60, study finds
Findings go against the assumption that mental processing speed declines from a peak at age 20

It is widely accepted as one of life’s bleak but unavoidable facts: as we get older, our brains get slower. But now a study, based on data from more than 1 million people, suggests that mental processing speed remains almost constant until the age of 60.

Volunteers wanted to help clear the footpath to the Potistis waterfall on the Poros-Skala road this Friday. More information from Odysseas Galiatsatos on 6932 638470.

Apparently the Archaeological Service of Kefalonia have put a stop to this plan as the waterfall and footpath are in an archaeological zone.

Nice idea, anyway.
