Government's Universal Jobmatch website 'bedevilled with fraud'
Around half of the vacancies on official job search website may be bogus, falsely promoted or against the rules, says Frank Field MP

A third of a million job vacancies advertised on the government's official website for jobseekers are suspected of being bogus, falsely promoted or against the rules, documents seen by the Guardian show.

Frank Field, a Labour MP and former minister... started asking questions about the website after discovering that some of his constituents had been scammed out of money by false employers, who asked for bank details upfront and cash for criminal record checks before disappearing.

It comes after an investigation by Channel 4 News estimated last month that more than 11,000 positions currently advertised on the government's Universal Jobmatch website may not actually exist, ranging from vacancies for sous chefs to dry-cleaners. In its early days, the website was ridiculed for advertising joke jobs for MI5 hitmen, mafia couriers and even prostitutes.

Poor 'live like animals' says Boris's privately educated sister after going on 'poverty safari'
'There’s this terrible sense of human waste. They’re existing, rather than living, like battery hens', she said

Ms Johnson also claimed her friends were now envious of her as many of them had never encountered poor people. "Bizarrely, I think there’s a lot of envy. ‘Lucky old Rachel, she went on poverty safari!’ An experience they can never have, even with all the money they’ve got,” she said.

An agreement for the development of health tourism for the elderly and people who need care while on holiday was signed on 5 March between Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and German Federal Deputy Labor Minister Hans-Joachim Fuchtel.

Mrs. Kefalogianni said the Greek Tourism Ministry would take the necessary steps so tourists in need of care while visiting Greece would have better access to hotels and other tourism services.

Clue to earthquake lightning mystery

Mysterious lightning flashes that appear to predict earthquakes could be sparked by movements in the ground below, US scientists say.

Unidentified glowing objects were spotted moments before major quakes in China and Italy recently.

These flickers could be triggered by shifting soil layers which generate huge electrical charge, say scientists.

Using a tub of plain kitchen flour, they discovered an entirely new physical phenomenon.

A wildlife group is calling for knitters to help little penguins in rehab recover by making woollen jumpers for them.

The Penguin Foundation said the jumpers are worn by penguins caught in oil spills, because they help keep them warm and prevent them from trying to clean the toxic oil off with their beaks.

The little penguins are also not as immune to the cold as those from the south.

The Penguin Foundation also provides a jumper knitting pattern for anyone wishing to donate.

European Union countries such as Poland and Greece are worried they may face gas shortages and economic damage if Russia stops pumping the fuel to Ukraine, with Kiev facing a Friday deadline to pay Moscow a $2 billion energy bill.

Debt-laden Greece is particularly worried.

"A disruption from Ukraine is the worst scenario for Greece," its energy experts said in input to the meeting, adding that liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity stood at 70 percent full and its next delivery was expected on March 14.

A mild winter means storage in the 28-country European Union is about 5 billion cubic meters (bcm) above the level of 2012 and 10 bcm higher than in 2013, according to the document.

That means a week-long cutoff could be managed, but a three-week outage, especially if the weather becomes cold, would strain supplies and drive up prices.

For EU leaders, the bloc's energy costs - much higher than those in the United States - are a political flashpoint.

Greek authorities say three people were injured when coastguards opened fire on a migrant-smuggling vessel that allegedly tried to ram their patrol boat.

A Merchant Marine Ministry statement says none of the three, two men and a woman, suffered life-threatening injuries.

The plastic speedboat was carrying 16 immigrants, 13 of whom were out of sight in a cabin, and a Turkish smuggler, who was arrested.

Its master allegedly ignored commands to stop early Thursday off the eastern Aegean Sea islet of Oinousses and, according to the statement, repeatedly tried to ram the coastguard vessel.

The statement said that, following engagement rules, the coastguards first fired shots in the air and then at the speedboat’s bows before it stopped.

Ms. Johnson writes for the Daily Mail but not for much longer I fear.
